The oriental philospher says, "to find a leaf, look in a tree". Looks like you have a few "leaves" in the neighborhood! The adventure to hunt somewhere else is always appealing to the hunter, solitude, no honey do's, cold calculation and perish all thoughts to quest the day to hunting.
:coolpics: I hae not seen anything like that here in the Springs, but have been seeing deer escaping from the burned area. Two of my friends I was going elk hunting with from out of state had to back out because of work, was considering on not going but after looking at the :coolpics: I think I will probably go anyway.
Different set of Bulls! The other Group had 2 large bulls and some smaller raghorns. They said they put the injured one down Wed morning! I took those pic's Thursday eve! Both groups had 5 elk! There are quite a few around!! The big bulls in the paper were several years older and much larger in the horns and body then the ones I saw and took pic's of!!!!
These are probably 3 1/2-4 1/2 year olds !!! There are 3 that I have seen here that are 8-10 years old and they show it!!! Remember these are in Town, sort of ,however there are plots of County mixed within the city where you could actually harvest one. These were in the County and huntable with the proper permission!!!!! As far as average bull goes, Colorado for the most part harvests 2 1/2 year old bulls in the OTC units!!! This is a draw area Unit 20 and has better or Older aged bulls. In general most people put in for Dec or Jan tag and hope that weather pushes More elk out of Rocky mtn National Park where they can be had!!!
Ya know it just "MAKES MY DAY" when I see elk (here in the Black Hills of SD) it must be really nice to live where one can have thier day made on a regular basis:thumbsup:

Thought that may be unit 20 based on where you were located. That a draw only unit I assume? That being said anybody in the unit participate with ranching for wildlife where nonresidents have a shot at a tag and dont have to wait a decade? Think it may be some around estes park but not sure if thats even same unit. Coming to hunt Colorado for first time this year and really didnt even give unit 20 a look. Making me think a little a little bit now about where to look for future trips..
guess they have become legal now by bow I assume? figured they would be split up and bugling a bit by now. looks like they have not even had much notion to start shining horns either. late rut maybe?
I don't blame those young bulls for cooling off when the temps are 90's. The big bulls in the mountains are screaming at night, difference in where they're at. Yes. these are fair game with a bow but pretty well in town!
Everything seems early this year, teal and mallards are in big flocks already, aspens starting to turn, corn being cut for silage, etc.
