Broods on Co-Ops !

We've been saying for some time now that the pheasant hunting in Pa. is on the up swing, not only did the State DOUBLE the amount of birds released, but a couple of the Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas have done fantastic!
Now I just got word that multiple broods are being seen on some of the Co-Ops that we hunt. These Co-Ops have had hold over roosters for some time, and now the hens seem to have pulled off successful broods.

Great news!

I hope these broods are located in rooster hunting only management units.

Maybe some day all of PA will be roosters only again.

Glad to hear about more brood sightings. I spoke with the woman who lives in the old farmhouse close to home and she said she saw a pheasant brood last week. Lets hope the good news keeps coming.

These particular Co-Ops, are unfortunately located in an either sex zone. The good news is that we see very few upland hunters in these areas. The area is now known for it's deer hunting, with a lot of out of staters owning land and hunting only the first week of deer season. The locals hunt mostly rabbits with beagles, but the return of the Ringneck hasn't gone unnoticed by them.
The PGC is under constant pressure to" increase" the amount of either sex zones. The birds are expensive on such a limited budget, and people want the most for their money. Personally I would like to see some areas go back to Roosters only. The State has changed since some of these zones were created.

Some more good news! On a private farm about three miles from these Co-Ops, the farmer told me he has seen multiple broods. He has been managing his property for pheasants for years. This is the first year that he feels they have established themselves. I hope to confirm that this weekend.

Boys...I think it's going to be a great year!

Wow, you guys are experiencing something special out there right now:thumbsup: Many of the folks in 'pheasant country' are experiencing the opposite feeling right now. Let's hope some other states will follow PA's lead:cheers:

Keep the updates coming!

kansasbrittany,

Thank You, there are indeed some good things happening in Pa., but I wouldn't want these posts to mislead you, Pa. still has a long way to go to match the Mid Western states. However if you own a bird dog in Ohio, New York, NJ, WV.,Maryland, etc. you may want to take a look at what Pa. has to offer!

I'll be sure to keep the updates coming!

We had another sighting of a pheasant brood on Friday. I'm pretty sure it was the same chicks there were seen earlier but it's good to know they are still surviving.

Well it was a long ride to the area of the Co- Ops, but I was rewarded almost immediately. I spotted a hen and at least two chicks after just minutes of searching. They were the only young birds I spotted however. But I was far from disappointed. The cover was excellent and I did see a couple of adult birds. After talking to the land owners I feel confident that the reports of multiple broods is right on.

Interestingly, the two women that own one of the Co-Ops where some of the broods were spotted, never saw the PGC release birds last year!

Agreed, but i can also see what FLDBRED said...

personally, i think its creates bad habits to shoot hens...

Hey Snipet, how have you been? Did you get a bird dog yet?

Looks like you can expect another good year in Pa.!

Things just keep getting better! I couldn't take it at home so I went for a ride to one of the WPRA's. I was lucky enough to see a few birds in the middle of the afternoon, but when I stopped to talk to a local, he said I had just missed over TWO DOZEN birds cross the road. He wasn't sure, but he felt most were young birds.

October here we come!

wow that would be an awesome sight anywhere let alone in Pa! its really good to hear the positive turn that the pheasants in Pa have done, and all these pheasants are around before the release of the state birds...it looks like it can only go up from here!

im doing alright, busy with work and school as usual and finally about to go on vacation to Fl and do some scuba diving with the family...no GSP yet, im still stuck in the house that the landlord wont allow pets until the end of sep. ill be getting one for sure after that...i might be moving soon too so the 2 hour drive may turn into a 6 hour drive to chase some ole roosters around, ha

hows things going with you?

Glad to hear from you, Snipit. If your moving south maybe you'll get lucky and get closer to a few quail. Be sure to let us know if you get that pup.

I was wonder how the WPRA birds were doing. Hopefully they had a good hatch.
