Hi--I have a 1 year old brittany that after the hunt his front leg swells around his joint--my doc buddy thinks its stress arthritis. He doesnt limp and you wouldnt know anything was wrong until after the hunt, the swelling the next day its alot better.Does anyone know of any treatment ? Ive never heard of this and hate it for the little guy. Thanks.

wow, I can't say I know anything about this, I have never heard of this..???
Bob,George, or Grove, Your guys know anything about this??????? Best of luck to you sir.

I too have never heard of anything like this. I would be looking at the breeder for a generic defect type thing. I know common animal pathology and Arthritis does not attack just one part of the body. It does so in combinations. Like me right now I have it my hands and feet. Tony has it in his hips and hind legs........Bob

There is such a thing as excercise induced cardiac collapse, mimics epilepsy, not a Brittany issue to date. Any injury history with that joint? Sounds more like a recurrent issue from an old injury, that the dog has never let heal completely. Seems like if it were an arthritis it would be manifest in more than one joint. Recovery seems fast and complete. Try managing with anti inflamatory, ( banamine, aspirin), This from a old amatuer practitioner on farm horses and dogs. I'm no vet, and the professional knows more than I do, however, I like to eliminate the less exotic and dramatic issues first and second vet opinions are good. As I reread your post and note the age of the dog, check to see if his growth plates are closed in that joint, I wouldn't rule out a sibling bit him hard in that joint as a pup, I've seen it a lot, and it takes a long time to heal.

Well, we raised rained, hunted and trialed our Britts for 40 years and dont believe this is a Brittany specific condition. It sounds like a response to an injury in that joint and you didnt say which joint it was. And that does make a difference.

I'd get an X-ray of the joint and a second vet opinion and go from there. Try to find a birddog vet. During the off season is the time to get this thing diagnosed and healed up.

Thanks for all the responses..... One of the post got me to thinking , I had my 12 year old gsp jump on him pretty hard just before season and he did get a bite on the other leg but may have got bitten on the ankle joint as well just didnt break the hide to where i could see it,and me hunting him has not allowed the joint to fully heal. I will get an x-ray and second opinion. Thanks again for all the help and feed back.
