Bree's First Hunt

I drove over to the Minnesota Heartland Preserve by Granite Falls, MN yesterday and had them put out 4 Chukars in a field for me. I have not had Bree on any birds since I got her in January. She is now 9 months old. So I wasn't quite sure what to expect. We had one wild flush out of range, she bumped 2 others and pointed one. I shot all three that she put up and she retrieved every one back to me. Once she got rid of some of the piss and vinegar she really worked the fields nice. After we had found all four birds I just spent time with her walking the fields. So overall I was quite satisfied with her performance. I can tell that what she needs is more bird contact and some steadying up. I am sending her to a trainer in Kansas for a month at the end of April.

I knew Bree would be a fairly big running dog just from her breeding. Turns out she is fast and a bigger runner than I anticipated. This dog can really cover some ground in light cover. She should turn out to be a great NSTRA dog. The heavier cover yesterday did make her work closer in so that was nice to see.

That's great to hear, sounds like a NSTRA champion in the making.
Look forward to hearing more about her progress.

Thanks Rock. Maybe we will meet again at another National NSTRA Trial.

My plan is to get Bree to the same trainer in January of next year for 2-3 months and hopefully have her ready for some trials next spring.

Hope to meet her some day George, I even have a dog to put down with her now if we get a chance to hit a few fields together.

I didn't get Bree to the trainer in Kansas last month as we were still clearing up some skin issues. So instead of the trainer in Kansas I just got back from taking her to Steve Chang at Godfather Gundogs in Colorado. Steve is who I got Elle from as a pup. I feel he is a top notch trainer. Bree will be with him for two months and I'll pick her up in North Dakota at the end of July when Steve heads up there for his summer camp. Seems strange not having that little ball of energy romping around the house.

Here's a couple of pics Steve sent me from this morning's training session. Only been a few days but things are going good so far.
