Boots

good deals

Check out www.sportsmansguide.com
they seem to have good prices on boots there. I just picked up a pair of Guide Series waterproof hikers for $30. I havn't field tested them yet, but they are very comfortable and lightweight.

Have been wearing Danner Pronghorn's for the last 4 years, most comfortable hunting boot I've ever worn. I didn't maintain the leather like I should have, and the stitching ripped out above the toes. That is a common complaint with them, this year they came out with a new toe piece that is supposed to stop that.

I just ordered a pair of Irish Setter Uplander's from Cabelas. On sale for $80, regularly $170. Will let you all know how I like them come November.

Hey All,

I'm brand new to Pheasant Hunting. I'll be headed out to SD late October with a group and was wondering what your opinions are on insulated vs uninsulated boots? I'm from Wisconsin, so I'm used to the cold but wanted to see what people thought.

Thanks!

Mine are not insulated. I also hunt SD in late October. While I have seen temps near 0, that has only happened once in 14 years. If I were deer hunting and sitting still, insulated might make more sense. Walking as much as I do when pheasant hunting, the non are just fine.

Thanks oscar. I received a pair of Danner Pronghorns today in the mail. I couldn't find a size 12 or 13 in any stores around me and the 12s feel a little small with thick socks on. After reading mixed reviews here, what's your view?

I always hunt with non-insulated boots, unless like was said above it is sitting in a deer stand where you don't get any blood flow.

Fit is a tricky issue, too tight and you cut down your circulation, too loose and you slip blisters on your heels and your foot squishes around inside the boot. They'll stretch a little bit, but its just one of those things you've got to figure out on what works best for you. I wear a medium weight SmartWool sock pretty much all season long.

On those Pronghorns, be sure and keep the leather conditioned. I recommend Obenaufs LP for that. It gets quite a following on a lot of the other hunting forums. Can be bought direct, or from Cabelas and several other stores online.

Here is an article about it--
