Boots?

Anyone have suggestions for a good pair of boots?

I have a lot of miles on my feet, and they are starting to catch up with me.

I don't mind spending up to $175 ... well, I mind, but I will pay that much. I have been suffering through two pair of "low budget" boots and my feet are paying the price. I just don't want to spend a lot of money to find out which boots that I don't like.

Looking for something that has support, isn't too flexible, water/snow proof, and warm.

Suggestions?

I like red wing boots, they are a little pricey, but they last a lot longer than the cheap ones I have had in the past, so maybe it works out in the long run. At the red wing store they sell inserts that have arch support, they run about $45, but they are awesome. I wouldn't go without them.

I bought some new boots this year for hunting, but purchased hiking boots instead of hunting boots. They are gore-tex and reasonably warm, but also lighter weight than most hunting boots. So far I am REALLY happy.

I (correctly) predicted that I would be walking a lot of miles this season and opted for comfort. So far so good. They have some sort of toe cap material on the front that has proven to be pretty durable so far.

I think the brand is Merrell or something like that.

If they are still in decent shape at the end of this season, I will not go back to upland boots.

Definitely go with Irish Setter/Red Wing boots. I am a little biased living in Red Wing but I have also worn several different brands and now have two pairs of Irish Setters that I love (not the Havoc Upland boots).

My quest for a comfortable pair of boots for my old feet has been well documneted on this site for the past couple of years. After much trial and error I finally found the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. I bought a pair of Irish Setter Havoc Upland boots. They are all leather and uninsulated. If that sounds like what you are looking for I'd strongly suggest you try a pair.

I think this is what I want to get for my next pair. I leaning towards the pull on ones though. Any insight on these?

From my point of view and experience, the pull-on boots are much easier to put on and take off, but I only do that once each time I wear them. In-between, I walk on uneven ground, and some muck, and really appreciate the support the laced leather gives my ankles, and the fact that the sucky muck can't pull the boot off.

I think...not sure...that I get less chaffing from the laced boot, as it is more firmly affixed to my foot.

dunno for sure. :)

Meindl nubuck leather boots are pretty good if your feet are no narrower that D (medium) width. Too wide for me and I got blistered while chukar hunting in northern Nevada, but a good boot for your price range.

I'd like to try the Meindels, but my budget won't leverage that. I found the Cabela's Outfitter series 9 inch 200 gram thinsulate boots about 15 years ago. I am hunting in my 3rd pair at this point. They last me about 5 years per pair where the boots I was buying before rarely lasted a season. They do take a bit to break in, but they protect your feet like armor.

Hmmm ... Cabela's is opening a new store about 10 min from my house this summer  which is also halfway to Colorado Wingsport hunting preserve ... this sounds like a good or bad combination depending on perspective.

Red Wing Boots

Just curious...what model of Red Wing boots do you/have you used?

Same as Dakotazeb, I bought a pair of the Irish Setter Havocs this fall as well. I like an uninsulated boot and I really like these boots so far. As you commented....very comfortable. I used a lot this season and they seemed to hold up well.

Red Wing #877

Are the 'old school' Red Wing #877's any good for upland hunting? I'm not sure of their water resistance or their traction capability since they have a relatively smooth sole.

Upland boots traditionally have a smooth sole to prevent picking up mud in the sole. If you're walking more varied terrain then a more aggressive sole is probably called for.

You cannot get anymore old school upland hunting boots than the 877/875s. But don't think they are particularly waterproof.

In that price range I'd get a pair of Rocky Outbacks. Waterproof, comfortable. Mine are beat to hell but still are waterproof after more than 15 years.
