Bobwhite whistle report

The pottawatomie route had a change in observer this year as indicated by the superscript b. Differences in individual observers (in this case hearing) have the potential to have an impact on the estimates and statistics, which is evident in this example. Estimates from someone with poor hearing can still be used to estimate change as there aren't major changes in their own ability from year to year, but we'll often see these unrealistic changes the first year a new observer takes over. We still present the esitmates for informational purposes, however they are not included in the statistics evaluating annual population change. High levels of turnover lately have plagued many of our surveys and many of the routes included are new observers this year.

This is really interesting. I have a farm in Morris Co, that is a little north and west of the route. Fortunately I am hearing and seeing significantly more quail this year than last year.

I hope this is mostly do to the habitat work I have been doing and not just better weather and breeding conditions. I have put in a fair amount of work with the Eqip program, Tree removal, prescribed burning 1/3 at a time, a pollinator plot, and killing back some brome that is getting under my plum thickets.

I have heard about double the whistling this year than last, where the county route was down 25%, makes me think I am having a positive impact.

But the really important survey is done with bird dogs in November.

I agree completely. I was out all spring chasing turkeys in NE KS,and heard more quail & roosters than I have in a decade plus. That said I am hopeful for this fall.
