Bird hunting during Gun Deer Season

Is this a really bad idea or not a big deal? I'm looking at the calendar and trying to see what to do.

Last year I crossed tracks with a deer hunter, he pulled up to a WIHA the same time I did. I spoke with him and he wanted to rattle for a deer he had been seeing in the area, I told him to go ahead that I would be back in about an hour, he kept his word got in and out then I was able to run my dog and pull a couple birds out of the field.

The second encounter I had, I was working the edge of a CRP and corn when I rounded the corner I could see a popup blind on a tree line a couple hundred yards away. I decided to turn around because they were there first. In my opinion that?s part of hunting public lands

segbert is right in his thinking, i always give way to deer hunters, its tough work. i can go anywhere on lots of public, wear plenty of orange, during the week i have never had a problem, weekends canget a little busy, go and enjoy.

I've traditionally bird hunted as normal during the rifle deer season, but I have started being more careful as I've gotten older.

You see some crazy stuff hunting WIHA and public lands during deer season. The worst one I saw was pulling up to a WIHA CRP field and seeing a 4-door truck driving through the field with rifles hanging out all 4 windows. That was a bit unsettling...

I would just advise caution and plenty of orange. The biggest difference I notice is an abundance of road hunters during that week. They drive slowly around the back roads, and you can't always be sure of their intentions.

I try to pick public areas that deer hunters wouldn't be so attracted to. Also, there are WIHA areas where rifle deer hunting is prohibited so they are more attractive during rifle season and especially on the weekends. Many deer hunters don't or can't stay on the stand all day so usually during the middle of the day the bird hunters can do their thing with limited deer hunters around. I really just try to avoid them and stay out of the field during low visibility hours. I really DON'T want to be anyone's flushing dog!!!

Wear blaze orange for sure.

This is one of those topics that we seem to discuss every year. That's fine, it's important. In addition to hunting birds, I'm a rifle deer hunter. Thus, I'm often on a deer stand instead of following dogs.

But, I have bird hunted during deer season before. I suppose I think about it a little and watch where I'm hunting. Most of my bird hunting spots are not what I normally think of as deer hunting spots. I've never had a problem. My dog wears a 2" reflective orange collar all the time she's in the field. She also has an orange vest for colder weather and deer season. I always wear an orange hat and my coat has orange on the shoulders and sleeves.

It's a great idea, til you get shot at. I wish we were like Iowa and didn't have them damn rifles. I had a fellow fire 2 shots at me. It just froze me in my tracks. I really wasn't for sure what happened at first. The first one blew dirt all over my face. I believe it hit a foot to the left of me. Not for sure on the 2nd one. On the 2nd shot I jumped to the ground and rolled down a hill. They shot from the truck and I think they finally realized what happened. The backed up and took off. They were shooting at me from about a 1/4 mile away or so. It happened just at sundown.

Ever since I took up bow hunting, I haven't filled a deer tag with my rifle. I wonder how many others are the same way. Longer season, hunting the rut, and more exciting up-close hunting... I will probably stick with my bow until my shoulder craps out, and then buy a crossbow and keep hunting the bow season.

I probably wouldn't miss rifle deer season either, but I don't see KS going away from rifle deer hunting. Rifle deer season is a strong tradition for many.

Rifle season allows me to fill my freezer with out wasting precious time chasing deer, that could be used for birds. I do hate the numerous road hunters and asses that will shoot at anything that moves I have encountered over the years.

I have had deer hunters come and ask us if they could set on the opposite side of a section of WIHA while we hunted it. They were hoping we would push deer towards them. Lot more traffic then , no issues yet though.
