Big Tom Fell to Itchy Trigger Finger

Wednesday was opening day for spring turkey. I am happy to say that at 6:15 pm on Wednesday a 22 pound Graham Co. tom was fooled into range by my decoys. Our morning set up came to naught -- toms all henned up. Later in the morning we snuck up on a tom and his three hen harem and my buddy took the tom. A lone tom was in the same cane stubble. I watched where he left the field and set up that evening for him. He came out alone just where he had disappeared into cover that morning.

Congrats on the Tom. I wish I was turkey hunting, but I didn't draw a unit 4 tag. I love the excitment of working a turkey.

I put in for a Unit 4 tag for the first time and was successful. There has never been a turkey shot on the Byrd Ranch, and I hope I can take the first. There are turkeys that hang out about two miles away and sometimes come within a half mile and rarely come on our property, but I hope I can coax one over the line and take him here.

I was at "the shack" this weekend in WI and saw 4 nice Tom's strutting.

Me and a buddy will be hunting May 6-10 for turkey and I hope to get my buddy his first Tom.

It was fun to hear them gobbling.

Turkeys do Excite

Congrats on the Tom. I wish I was turkey hunting, but I didn't draw a unit 4 tag. I love the excitment of working a turkey.

When the tom came out of cover, looked at my decoys, and went into strut after I yelped three times, my heart was going eighty.

There a few hunting experiences that equal the excitement of calling in a gobbler.

Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods, (NW Arkansas) we've had terrible hatches the last few years. I rarely hear a gobble on my 50 acres.

That's funny you mentioned morels b/c I was bringing a load of firewood up out of my woods yesterday and I accidentally trampled 3 or 4 morels. I don't eat mushrooms.

Are they valuable???

Yes they're quite valuable/pricy. I don't sell them when I find them, but I've heard from multiple people that they sell for $50/pound in the city.

Been quite a few years since I have been in NW Arkansas(Gravette, Bella Vista, Fayetteville) and I don't recall seeing any turkeys while there. Now I did see lots of chickens going down the road.

I just got back from Southeast Kansas and got a 24 lb 10 inch beard and 1in spurs. I consider myself lucky to get anything. The hunting was slow and very hard. Toms were all hened up and they didn't come to decoys or calling most of the week. They didn't even pay attention to us most of the time. I was able Saturday afternoon to call in a pair of toms that worked real slow but those are the only 2 gobblers that I was able to pay attention to me. It has been a very cool spring and I don't think they are totatlly in the love stage yet. But I was still able to bag a big bird.

There was a decent amount of turkeys hanging around my woods up until about 5 years ago. I used to hear them gobbling practically every day in spring.

You'd be surprised what kind of critters are roaming around these Ozark hills. Just last week my local paper had a trail cam pic of a mountain lion. This is 25 miles east of Fayetteville.

BTW there are still lots of chickens going down the road.... sometimes in the road.

I didn't see any morels -- but I wasn't looking for them. I have not added mushrooms to my "to be hunted" list, although I love eating mushrooms. I need some tips on finding and identifying them.

Thanks Britchaser it was a lot of fun just getting out since the end of pheasant season.
