Beepers?

Anyone still use them? I need a new collar and I saw that sportdog has a new beeper combo that looks pretty nice. Just wondering if anyone uses one and what the advantages are if any instead of or with a gps?

There are lots of people that still use beepers.
I have gone completely to the Garmin. I love not having all the noise, and I can quickly find my dog in heavy cover.

Down side to the Garmin is the cost. But having the security that you can find your dog in pretty much any conditions at great distance is nice.

Once you go GPS you will never go back! It's absolutely amazing to be able to go into the thickest of cover and have complete confidence you will get to every rooster.

I too was worried about cost so I went with the SportDog TEK V1.0. It does not have all the functionality of the garmin but it is a shock & GPS in one unit. I picked up mine for $440 shipped.

It's absolutely awesome to completely loose sight of your dog in a marsh and then all of a sudden your handheld will vibrate signaling that the dog's on point, x number of yards west. I've almost run into the dog he was pointed in such thick cover before noticing him.

I can attribute 2 roosters this season to the GPS (picked up 3 weeks ago). Without it they would have flown or run off before I ever found the dog.

Good luck on your quest!

I started using a beeper collar (Dogtra 2502T&B) last season. Can't believe I didn't buy one sooner. I've become totally reliant on it. I run the collar in "point only" mode. I love when I hear that beep knowing my dog is on point. Seems a little more simple than having to always be looking at the unit to see where your dog is. Of course it does have it's deficiencies. Difficult to hear in the wind and because I have some loss of hearing it makes it tougher to hear also. But I still love it.

I didn't realize that the handheld unit on some of the GPS's will vibrate when the dog is on point. That would be nice.

How far away would you be able to hear the beeper collar?

Way too many variables to give an estimated distance. Ideal conditions with no wind I would guess 50+ yards, maybe more.

I can't find anything on SportDog's site that says the transmitter vibrates when the dog is on point. I'm not doubting you, just seems strange they wouldn't say that under features. I did read that you can set the Garmin to vibrate or give a tone, or both when the dog is on point. I have to seriously consider one of the GPS collars because with my lack of hearing it's getting harder to hear the beeper.

Is this the review you were referring to?

This is a nice product except for one thing. Unless you have PERFECT hearing you will not be able to hear the beeps from the collar or the hand held receiver. The Point Notification Mode can be set to vibration and/ or beep. You have to be holding the receiver in your hand to feel the vibration, if stuck in your vest or pocket with any layer of hunting clothes you won't feel it. The on-point beep notification is a VERY VERY WEAK non-adjustable high frequency tone. If you have any hearing loss at all, which most of us veteran hunters do, you cannot hear it unless held very close to your ear. Sportdog needs to modify this notification function to a fully adjustable sound across the frequency spectrum with volume control.

Appears SportDog could improve on this function.
