Any advise on getting a dog use to a beeper collar? I recently purchased the Dogtra 2502T&B for my Brittanys. Right now I have the collars on their kennels (kennel doors open) and the collars in the Run-Point Mode so they beep continuously. They are not liking the beeping and act like someone just whipped 'em. The appear very nervous and afraid. I did try putting the collar on then and hitting the locate button and they both came running back to me. I sure don't want that. I'm assuming that after continued exposure to the beeping that they will learn to ignore it. Just wondering what others have done to successfully acclimate their dogs to the collars.
 
Try stuffing it with cotton then put a piece of tape over it. This will muffle the sound and wont be so harsh on the ears. In about a week take half of the cotton out and so on until they get use to it. Worked for me anyways. Good luck.
 
Good Advice above. We had Britts for many years and , yes, some were on the soft side.
On the ones which were bothered by them, I just put the collar on and let them wear it in the kennel, yard, truck, going for walks, being fed, etc etc. Everybody soon became accustomed to them and went about business as per usual.

Oggies got it. I haven't had to condition a dog with the new beeper pointing down--but plugging the cone of the beeper and slowly opening it up over time worked for me.

Another trick is to use them around tame training birds of a species you don't hunt. Particularly if you don't plan on using them in run mode--associating birds with the beeper helps dogs appreciate them pretty quickly.

You plan on using them around your country? I have not found the wild birds out there to enjoy them much. Work great for locating a dog on point in cover heavy enough you can't see it--but best have the gun at the ready when you hit the locate button.
 
We'll see how they work out. I've never had a beeper collar before but I get frustrated when my dogs go on point and I can't find them. Guys I've talked to don't seem to have a problem with the beeper scaring the birds. I will only use the "Point Only Mode" or totally off and use the locate button. I can't stand when someone has their beeper collar in the "Run Mode".

I condition my dogs to the beeper by placing the beeper 35/40 feet away from them. The collar is set on a chair or any convenient place that is not above the dog’s head. I activate the beeper for about 30 seconds and then silence it. If the dog shows any sign of fright I place the collar a greater distance. I activate the collar several times a day. I also allow the dog to investigate the silent collar. Careful, some may pick it up. After several days of exposing the dog to the collar sound, at a distance, I move it in to about 10 feet. Watch the dog he will “tell” you when he wants to check it out. Activate the collar for several days, and allow the dog to again investigate. By now he will probably allow you to place the collar on him. I have done this with the last five dogs I owned, both English pointers and GSP. I have not had any problems I am older, and do not hear as well. I now run an Astro 220/40 collar with a Tri Tronics e unit on the same collar. It works great for me.
 
I agree with the above post. I train my dogs just as if I were gun conditioning, Get the pup or pups out for play time, let them out for free run time. Throw some bumpers so they are focused on a task. Carry the beeper with you. Just an earlier post suggested...tape a cotton ball over the speaker to muffle the sound, just sound it off at a distance from the dogs, then just keep working in closer and closer until the dogs show no negative response.
PS...Use the locate mode so you have control of turning it off and on.

I used 2 beeps for here on Ole Sally and doing the same on Dee. Sure beats yelling at them . It even helps on there reteives to get them back
