Barrel Threading/Carlsons

I have a 20 guage Charles/Daily Miroku. It fits me well and I was going to have the barrels threaded for chokes at Briley's until I saw the price. Later I saw the same service offered by Carlson's at a more favorable rate, does anyone have any expierence with Carlson's barrel threading? Thanks in advance.

Mike Orlen in Amherst MA does excellent barrel work and choke threading. He has done several guns for me and the price and turn around was all I could ask for. Highly recommended.

Barrels

Sneem,

Thanks for the heads up, do you usually call him first or just ship the barrels off with a check.

Make sure to ask what thread and brand of tube he is able to thread it to. Colonial is a no way, no how. Their thread is too fine and they tend to shoot loose. They are also not recommenced for shooting hard non toxic shot through by other experts in the business, besides colonial themselves. I had a Browning A5 Magnum 12 that had Colonial tube that had been installed. I was shooting steel through it. It shot loose very fast and after cleaning and thoroughly tightening. The tube broke off after only a few shots, right even with the threads. I was lucky and got it out. I called Colonial and they denied warranty. They gave me a butch of mumbo-jumbo about not using proper choke tube lube made specifically for choke tubes. I told him in no certain terms, to stick their choke tubes up his @$$. Traded the gun off that same day. That's after I called a well qualified choke tube expert and he advised against ever shooting steel or other hard non toxic shot through Colonial thread pattern tubes.

Another thing, some guns don't have enough meat (too thin barrels) to install anything but thin wall tubes. Many times you can not shot hard non toxic shot through these thin wall tubes. Just a heads up in cases this would be the case in your situation. You wouldn't want to go through all that work, with the objective in mind of making your gun steel shot compatible. Then find out you can't shoot steel through it anyways. Make sure to ask plenty of questions. You want somebody well qualified. Nothing worse then getting tubes installed and the gun shoots a foot left of point of aim. Good Luck

Had tubes installed by Carlson's on a Red Label. They seemed to have done good work.

Info

Guys,

Thanks for all the info, I took a look at the gun and it is choked m over i/c. I thought it was f over m for some reason.Do yo think it makes more sense to just leave the gun as is and the few times I shoot steel use classic double from hevi-shot despite its mediocre reviews for the 20 guage? Since the Charles Daly is the poor mans citori I don't know if it makes sense to invest money in it.

If it were mine, I would leave it as is. It's choked in a very desirable combination. Ditto on the Kent Tungsten Matrix.

Kent Tungsten Matrix

Has anyone found one load better than the other? The places I am forced to use steel are usally released birds that get up fairly close or California Quail. I was thinking the 2 3/4 6 or 7, however; my CD accomadates 3 inch shells.

IC/M great combo

I have a 20 ga Winchester 101, IC/M, 1964 vintage. Three inch chamber. It works great with tungsten matrix. Where lead is allowed 1 oz of 5 or 6 also will do the job. Limit your shots to 35 yards or less.

has any body tried itx shot from ballistic products?i have some older full choke 12 gauge guns ,an old 16 ga. and a couple of 20 gauges.just wondered if itx could be used to' revisit" old lead loads and still obey the non toxic shot law.i think its a reloaders proposition only.thought about buying some to use the old guns once in a while

I looked all over before I chose Briley to extend the chambers on my Citori 20 ga. A little more money but great patience and answered all my questions. They did the job and got it back to me sooner than promised.
I contacted Mike Orlen by email and he responded with a price that was half of Briley. When I contacted him a couple of times with a question about the job he never replied. There's also this which he seems to have no interest in correcting. I didn't use him as a result.

A friend's got a Citori 20 ga. with Imp and mod fixed chokes. I've seen him make some amazingly long shots on both pheasants and ducks with it.

Barrel Threading

All,

Thanks for the great info, I've decided to leave the gun alone and have some Tungsten Matrix, Hevi-Shot Classic doubles, and some Fiocchi Tundra on the way. I thought I'd try and pattern them all and see which one does best out of my gun. I am hoping the Tundra does alright because its a little better on price. Although if you compare any of this to my walleye fishing habit, it is a drop in the bucket.:D I can't wait to fire my old twenty at some bird that decided to call state ground his home.
