Baretta AL2

My dad went to a gun auction the other day and asked if I wanted anything while he was there. I told him I was ready to move up to a semi-auto, but wasn't real picky about what he got. I told him I'd pay about half of retail for about any name brand shotgun.

He picked up a Beretta AL2 w/ a vented barrel for $400 that is in very good shape w/ the exceptioon of one scratch on the stock (it will have many more when I'm done with it so I don't care).

First, do you think I got a good deal on this gun? (I haven't bought many used guns in my day)

Second, if you have one (or have had one), how do you like it? Advantages/disadvantages?
 
I'm not real familiar with the AL2. It was a the predecessor to the 300 series guns and made in the 1970's. Looking on Gunbroker.com there are a few listed for around $400 and not selling. There is another with no reserve that the bidding is at $281 with 1 day left on the auction. Based solely on this I would say you paid "top dollar" for your shotgun. The other thing is that I think they are only 2 3/4" guns, but I think they are very good guns. You could have bought a new Stoeger 2000 3" for the same money.
 
I claim ignorance when it comes to semi autos, so I can't really comment on how you did.

That said, in terms of upland hunting, I can't think of a single reason to have a gun chambered in 3 inch. It would be of ZERO consequence to me. In fact, I consider the 20ga 3" to be a complete bastardization. You didn't mention gauge, so I'm assuming it is 12. I can see the merits of a 12 ga 3" for applications such as turkey and waterfowl.

$400 for a new Stoeger or $400 for a 30 year old Beretta? No brainer. Wouldn't matter if the Stoeger would shoot a 5 inch shell.

Yeah, it is looking like I may have paid too much. The nice thing is, I knew the guy that owned the gun and he takes very good care of his equipment, and seldom used it. The gun probably hasn't had more than 3 boxes worth of ammo through it in its life. His possessions were auctioned off and the money was donated to a good cause anyway. I just wanted to see what everyone thought b/c I spend no time shopping for guns.....it just drives me crazy not being able to buy all the ones I want so I don't even look.

Have you shot it yet? How do you like it? We'll have to see if it can kill some birds this year! :D
 
I've not shot it yet. It's being delivered tomorrow. Yes, I agree we need to get together this season. Consider coming out to do some Argentina style dove hunting in NC KS w/ me this season. Sunflower fields are the only way to go. 8 boxes of shells in 2 days if you shoot like me....it's a good time.
 
Have zero experience with the AL2, but bought a new 391 7 years ago and it is awesome, don't know why I messed with 870's so long. Considering a new 391 is $1000 or so, I don't think you got hurt paying $400.
 
You bought it so no, you did not pay too much. My dad shot an AL2 for years and loved it. Of course he would after shooting a Sears Ted Williams pump for years before the AL showed up. Shoot the thing and either keep it or trade it. That's the fun of a new gun.
 
Don't get me wrong, I'm not too concerned if I paid an extra hundred bucks. Like I said, I don't shop for guns much so I didn't really know. My dad does and I was sure he wouldn't overspend a great deal, so I'm happy. Like cheesy said, after using nothing but an 870 my entire life, I'm sure I'll enjoy the new (2me) gun.

I got the gun last night and it is nice. I've never owned anything but an 870 so this thing is just great. I can't wait to shoot it. It is very clean, has the gold trigger and silver mechanisms so it looks good too. I feel very comfortable with my purchase. Now we'll see if I can hit anything with it;)

Dude, I'm in for sure....Give me a weeks notice and it should be good.
