Bald Eagles in Kansas

Today my family & I saw two bald eagles feeding on a dead deer in a wheat field. It was not more than 50 yards away from the highway. One was an adult with the white head and one young. That is as close as I ever been to one. For the past 20 years I have seen them in air once in a great while here in south-central Kansas but never that close. This was a great way to end 2011. I have attached photo's my daughter-in-law took. The pictures are small & do not do justice to the beauty of these birds, but not bad for cell phone picture.

There are several breeding pairs around Tuttle Creek and Milford.
They are some impressive birds. But they don't hold well for a pointing dog, and they eat flushers :D

Had a pair on the ice here at Kingman State Lake earlier this month snacking on duck! They're here every year. I also get several Osprey. For some reason they excite me more than the eagles. Had Tundra swans here once, nice!

I have analog pictures somewhere in the pile-o-stuff from the outflow ponds below the Tuttle Creek Dam. Its winter and there are about 30 eagles of various maturity hanging out in the trees. Ponds were mostly frozen and the birds were swooping in to grabd the dyining shad for snacks. very cool. If I can find the pic I'll scan it and post...

:D Daisy had a really solid red tail hawk point one year in SW Kansas. That was NOT what I was expecting to flush when I walked it up. I was surprised it stayed there eating until I was nearly on top of it.

Bald eagles are impressive birds. I haven't seen any along the river yet this Winter. We really enjoyed watching them at the farm last year. Hopefully they'll be back.

We see them a few times/yr here in Wabaunsee county and it is a treat every time; everyone in the family gets excited:)

Thanks for sharing the story and pics!!

eagles

There are several breeding pairs that live on the islands on the ohio river, close to home. I was goose hunting saturday and had a pair fly right over me, about 30 yards high. Closest ive ever been to them. Good thing i dont shoot on a whim, the snuck in on us and i almost grabbed my goose call. They trully are an amazing bird.

Magnificent birds. One of my lifetime memories is watching a Bald Eagle eating a fish while my kids watched.
We were sitting in one of those three season rooms at the time and the bird was in a cotton wood tree not 30 yards from us.
They work the river I hunt ducks on a lot looking for cripples.

Way back in the 60's I had a Bald Eagle take a Brook Trout off a small Beaver dam in the Bladk Hills of SD not more than 20 ft away while I was eating my lunch durning deer season. I was just sitting there quitely and did not see him until he was just about to strike, a truly great experence. A memory I'll take to the grave.:10sign:

It's definitely something I took for granted when I lived outside of Seattle, I saw them all the time.

One Day while duck hunting up north of Seattle an hour or so, I had a pair of Pintails come in, dumped one and crippled the other. He set his wings to glide across the lake, I had completely forgot about the Bald Eagle that had been sitting across the lake all morning. He caught up to the pintail so fast and snatched him out of the air, something I'll never forget!

We also watched eagles at the same lake steal birds from guys as their dog was on the way out to them. Can you imagine what was running through the dogs head? lol

I was fishing on Tuttle Creek Lake last summer and watched 8 Bald Eagles cruising around the lake. Awe inspiring!!
