Anyone do good in KS this year?

any luck in KS anywhere? Heard some really good things north almost to nebraska, but we didnt do any good at all in Beloit early season. Anyone?

It has been a tough year for me. We did OK on some private land NW, a few pheasants and some quail. But we shot halve the number of bird there as we did last year the last weekend of January :(

The quail numbers around home are off 70%. Tough year to be starting a new pup.

Good Luck, there are some out there, but not a normal year bird wise.

Yeah been hearing a lot of that. not sure if it was the drought or what. I guess they actually were OK with water out west.

Have had great hunting in NW all season including yesterday and today.

Look out! I'm about to blast you with rainbows and sunshine!

I'm going to have to say, "worst upland season ever".:(

My old dog died right before the upland season started, and it still hurts.

Managed to get my pup into ... wait for it ... ZERO coveys of quail around home and zero coveys in SE Kansas. Except for one pretty good field we stumbled onto in NW Kansas, the poor little thing probably has forgotten what we are even looking for.

My 4 1/2 year old GWP is in the prime of her hunting career and in excellent physical condition. She got a little bit of pheasant action, but had pretty much the same quail season as the pup.

Highlights- I shot a deer with a bow for the first time.:D Reunited with an old hunting buddy who has been away for two years. Introduced a newbie to upland hunting.:D Got a puppy.:) Started a new "annual" trip.

So I guess it wasn't ALL bad. When I look at the hunting season in general, the deer and the waterfowl salvaged it for me. My upland season reminds me of a monkey F-ing a football.

Happy New Year!

Sorry if I killed your thread. I was just being honest. My post sounds more negative than I intended... I have actually enjoyed the season so far. I don't have much to show for it, but I guess that's why it's called hunting and not killing.

I've killed exactly ZERO roosters in KS this season, but I've not given what I'd consider an honest effort, except one day in Washington county! I was 10 years old the last time I went a full season w/o harvesting a KS rooster.

I've been skunked a couple of times in the NE part of the state. Have seen very few quail here in LV county. Usually get out and walk the creek a couple times and shoot a few. Weather has been so warm that i forget the season is slipping away. We shot a few earlier in the year. I am going to give it one more try next weekend out west. It will be a long off-season.

Ah, it still runs until January 31st----better not break tradition.;)

Things lined up right for me on Xmas eve day. My two sons and I hunted Seward and Stevens Cos and managed to limit out. Birds were bunched in heavy cover lots of snow, great dog work and surprisingly saw good numbers of birds. Contrary to what most people are seeing most of the birds we shot were this years birds.

I have had good luck in the NW this season.
Hunted alone last week for two days and bagged 5 roosters.
During the last cold spell I was impressed by the number of birds I saw when they were all bunched up..saw groups of 30+ birds in several different locations.

CRAP! I am heading to Washington county on Friday. Oh well, more exercise I guess.:D I'll post a report if there is anything to report.

Good luck to you, KB. I hope you get your bird.

South Central KS

I hunt in Harper Co. in South Central KS on private land. Compared to the last two years, hunting has been pretty poor this year. I've had worse hunts though. I've been hunting for about 13 years or so and overall, I'd give this season a 5 for my area. We saw plenty of roosters but they were flushing 60 yards out or better. I'm going back down this weekend for the last time this season. Would be nice if some mysterious cold front came threw and laid a blanket of snow on the ground but I don't see that happening. I'm bringing an out of state friend of mine who is a newbie to pheasant hunting. Hopefully it doesn't completely turn him off to pheasant hunting.

I just noticed mention above that your older dog had died. Everything you put in here says you're a good man and one who gave your old dog a great life. I too am still hurting over the death of mine in '07.

No worries: Your first post was life itself - both positive and negative.

Gee thanks, BC. that's probably the nicest thing anybody from Lawrence has ever said to me.

Seriously, there are a lot of really respectable guys who post on these forums, yourself included. I hope we have stuff to talk about all year. This is my favorite forum!

I did great- didn't spend much money- the Britt's and I enjoyed being in the field- they handled nicely and made quite a lot of awesome points and backs-

2-3 hour hunts every other day has been good for me and them-

as much fun to enjoy the scene, take some pictures, and not be concerned with shooting a limit- sometimes we never got a rooster point- we had just as much fun with hens- Britt's don't seem to care if I shoot or not

these days I don't look at it as how many roosters I shoot as to good or bad

We started near Russell and ended up in Oberlin by the end of the trip. Only jumped 3 birds and one covey around Paradise. But a guy up the road hunted for 30 minutes and limited out and took 2 quail. We didn't do very well, hunted all WIHA and took 6 birds in three days. The best tract we hit was 89 on map 2. A guy I know went west of Oberlin on all private ground and they limited out every day of the week.
