Any deer hunters?

it's all good-

I've hunted Alaska on my own- bull moose and double shovel caribou- you think a 7X7 elk is all that big- I don't

I've seen elk racks for sale in many places in Colorado

I've also seen many places where the big elk are in pens

I think you're talking to hear yourself talk

Ok, Wow, YOU THINK. this thread was started to help CRP. GOOD for you on the bull moose and the caribou. But this theard is not about that. you didnt like my reply fine. I see CRP gave up on this thread.

what he's talking about is you saw the post- you didn't read down to know the facts-

and then -20"ers out there but you have to hunt for them- nice comeback

I'd say you have to hunt for most anything

and- seems he's pretty close to Wyoming and probably knows what he's talking about-

. Gas hills, is the king area of speed goats. @20 plus inches common. casper has big speed goats around pathfinder and all the ways to rawlins. The biggest mules I saw last year are around the ferris range. We took a 32" 5x5 Last year, just outside of pathfinder, Not to far from miricale mile. We took a 7x7 Bull elk not far form this sight. you wiil have a hard time beating wyoming for big game. mt, idaho, Alaska, Maybe. IMO:)

you came on with this- speed goats- cracks me up

quote "you'll have a hard time beating wyoming for big game"

you got some pictures to put up with you in them

Wow, The link clearly states NEW WORLD RECORD FROM WYOMING. what are you talking about. YOU live in sw nebraska, YOU dont live in WYOMING, so why are jumping on my rear end, When i was only trying to help CRP, which started this thread. I dont want any more hate mail, about this thread, you dont believe me fine. I'll admit you have to hunt for them, but they are there.

YOU were blowing off at the mouth. READ the rest of the posts in your link. I will promise you you can hunt your whole life in Wyoming or anywhere else and I will all but guarantee you won't see, let alone shoot a 20 inch pronghorn. Check Boone and Crockett record books and I will PROMISE you there are not more than 10 bucks in there with that long of horns, and probably not 5.

HAHAHAHA - Chill dudes, I feel like I am witnessing a knock-down-drag-out exibition of the human-rut!!! Somebody's gonna break off one of those 20" horns if you keep it up... :D

Yeah, it got a little more heated than your typical Kansas conversation...

Besides, everybody knows you start measuring horns from the base of the jawbone and stretch the tape to "just past the tip" of the horns. Then you are also allowed to add extra growth as time passes. Any alcohol consumed during the telling of the story also adds an inch or two.

So, as you can see, 20 inches is quite common regardless of what any record books might say. You just have to measure properly and allow for the time + alcohol factor.

LMAO oh how true that is!

Easy guys. No need in getting up in a tizzy about any of this. State your points w/o trying to be inflamatory to other members of the board.

If anybody was inflamed by my observation, I apologize sincerely.

I have been known to stretch the truth from time to time, that's all I was saying.

I once caught a bass that weighed 7.6 lbs on a digital scale. I was pizzed at my fishing buddy for not getting out of bed that morning, so by the time I told him the story about the fish it was already up to 8#. "If you would have gone fishing today you might have caught an 8# bass," I told him...

That's still the biggest bass I've ever caught, but I have heard myself claim to have caught bass that were "pushing 9#". Of course I was properly lubricated at the time and the devil made me do it.

Come to think of it, I caught that fish back in college and that digital scale was never certified to be accurate... That bass was probably "pushing 10#"... yeah, I would say it was easily over 9#, because I remember it was really big...

And that's how legends are written.:D:D:D

Truth is, anybody should be real happy with a 17" lope. I have a 14" one on my wall with such thick mass and a very unique heart-shaped inward, down-turned curl that the NMG&F guys at the check station said they would have considered it a trophy themselves. Best part about it is my son shot it at 12 yrs old (his first big game animal) with his rifle laying across my back for a rest as I coached him in a whisper & then held my breath - that's what makes it a real trophy to me!

@Rut - Since this is your thread, yeah I'm a DEER HUNTER & dang I miss living & BOWHUNTING on a certain Bucks County, PA farm with the fall colors & the pre-rut kickin in around mid to late Oct!!! Used to have a ball with mock scrapes & a grunt call...a lot more fun & challenge than the lame rifle-hunting from an enclosed box blind over a corn feeder that I grew up on in TX (although it was fun & exciting when I was a kid)!

I sure wish to heck I could hunt some of these bull elk going-off-the-chain right now around my house here on the outskirts of Denver. Been playin with em' just for fun lately - had 8-10 of em' going to town last week with non-stop screamin & car-crash antler clanging going on. Had a punk 5x5 come within 5 yards of me, antlers glowing in the full moon night-be4-last while sittin in the backyard hot tub, & near the church office after work yesterday had a nasty jet-black Bad-Boy all covered in mud & soaking wet come within 15 yds lookin for my mouth calling...Kill or no kill, it's a hoot!!! Wish I could get somebody to video some of it just for funsies!

But at this phase of my life, NONE of this makes my heart pump quite like a wily ol' rooster suddenly springing up point-blank in front of the dog with a howdy, cackle-doodle-do!!! :D

Amen brother, keep tellin' it like it is. Roosters are where it's at. People that aren't familiar with hunting tend to assume I leave on w/e's to hunt deer. They're always asking, "Ju kill a deer this year?" No, I don't care to hunt deer b/c it is BORING to me. I called in a couple of turkeys and shot them.....very enjoyable but after doing it a few times, it just isn't that exciting. If there ever comes a day when I can use my dogs to hunt deer, I'll probably pick it back up, but until then, bird hunting is where my heart is....the other things just don't get me excited enough to keep coming back.

Toad,

I don't think you offended or inflamed anyone. My post held no reference to anything you'd posted.

Hen, Hen, ROOSTER, you post just made me a little homesick for Utah. I loved waiting for the sun to rise and hearing the echos of bugling bull elk in the fall! I also prefer the cackle of a big ol' rooster in front of a solid pointing dog, but there is a long hard wait until November, so that is when I pick up a bow and try my luck with deer. I will admit it is a different style of hunting out here compared to Utah. There are A LOT more trees out here, it is like hunting in a jungle! I am used to the more open patches of aspen and oakbrush, I now see why everyone on TV hunts whitetails out of a treestand or blind. It is kind of hard to do a spot and stalk hunt on a deer when you can only see 10 feet in front of you! Hopefully we get some cold weather to roll in and get these bucks all fired up, they are easier to stalk when they are pre-occupied!

Rut

had a few private pieces of property just south of Lawrence- I'd put up a portable or build a small platform 18-23' up- small patches or woods- not to difficult to arrow 4 deer a year- bone them and that was my years meat supply-

I'd also still hunt- sometimes take a turkey, sometimes stalk a coyote
wasn't what you'd consider a trophy hunter- but if there was a big one arround I'd do some rattling- can be quite effective- drift through a likely area acting like a deer

@Toad - lots of stories, animals & fish seem to have "grown" in my mind over the years! :p

@KB - Hope we finally get a chance to meet each other face-to-face down at the Marshall Dillon/Miss Kitty saloon bull-shoot at the tail-end of the season!

@Rut - the whitetail/deep-woods game is just as fun as the big-country spot & stalk! Just a totally different game - a bit more like a chess match!!! Just make em' come to you...although I have had some awful big bucks practically trip over me & never even know (OR CARE) I was there, when their eyes are all bloodshot w/lip-curled & outta their head!

@Shadow - d@m! ur good if you can "stalk a coyote"!!! That's even better than them 20" goat horns! :D

why thank you hen,hen

neighbor was spreading it arround the next week that is was a sick coyote
I told a few- for $1,000.00 I believe I can do it again

I had a couple deer already- my neighbor wasn't so lucky- I took him in the dark and had him get up in my deer stand- said I was looking for a turkey, would circle 1/2 mile, you should see me come thru that field- maybe move a deer your way when I go into the woods over there- you might watch for me

couple hours later as I'm coming thru the field of foot tall grass, heading his way, I see something- stop and kneel down waiting to get a better look and what it was doing

coyote working the edge of the woods- wind is not strong but blowing from it to me so

took me awhile- raised up with bow ready- 30 yards was the coyote with the head down- thought I could get closer- bit later I peeked- it was staring at me- I froze- head went down I moved- there was sort of a water way I moved into- came up the other side- no coyoote- I slowly lowered thinking it was close but not sure where- slowly came up- coyote was mousing- real close- I drew and released- arrow passed thru the chest and zinged up in the air- coyote was struggling on the ground- blood all over and spraying- I nocked another arrow but it soon stopped moving-

I knelt down- said a small prayer- thought it had been amazing and quite fun- stood up- looked at where I had come- looked at where I was standing- looked at the coyote- close

layed my bow down and walked slowly thru the patch of woods- Tom was looking down at me- said I need a camera and come see what I got

I descrided the stalk, he said he had been watching, but couldn't see me when I shot- was in a hurry- but I wanted to talk about it- we came in as I'd came- before the dip I said I almost shot here but thought I could get closer-
slowly creeping up the rise I showed him- he saw my footprints- saw where I moved one foot- coyote was right there- he measured it off- 24'

I layed my backpack down got out the camera- wanted him to take the picture from there- I got the coyote proped up a bit on my knee, held the bow- he took 3 pictures- one closeup

I have it on my wall- 14X16- neighbor is still alive and kicking

now don't laugh- blue jeans, camo shirt, NRA Black cap, sunglasses

brother says don't do that where he's at- he'd be looking for some remains and have to explain to the family
