Any deer hunters?

Do any of you guys pass the time before the phez and quail hunts with deer? I used to hunt deer and elk pretty seriously when I lived in Utah, but it seems like most people I talk to only hunt either ducks/geese or phez/quail or deer but not all the above???
Today is the opener for archery and ML and I have been watching a nice 10 pt for a couple of weeks that I would love to get with my bow, I may try and set up on him this weekend. Anyone else chasing deer around?

Rut

Yes, but mostly next door in WY. With more public land available, and bigger deer, WY is the place to go. Some of the landowners are much more receptive to hunters than my home state as well. For 2010, antelope over by Devil's Tower and mule deer not far from Casper.

BTW, my last year living in KS (1979-1993) I took a nice 7x6 whitetail up by Glen Elder.

sad to say not this year- next year-

Rutt, I am an all of the above guy, although waterfowl will be taking a back seat from now on!!! Upland will be the passion after the big game ends!!!!!!

I'm an "all of the above" guy as well. No early season deer for me, though. Hopefully I will get one on the first day of rifle season again so deer hunting doesn't cut too much into my bird hunting time. Might actually try to shoot two deer this year. I ran out of deer sausage in April this year, and I would prefer to snack on it all year.

I used to be just an upland guy, preferring quail.

Since I got involved with the Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors program, it's become "all of the above".

We want to see kids getting out and doing it all...fishing, hunting, shooting, camping, hiking, canoeing...anything we can to get them outdoors.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm hoping everyone here is planning on introducing a kid to hunting this fall!

Check out some photos from our recent activity on our Facebook page (http://bit.ly/a0xl94).

Take a kid Hunting!

@PassItOn - NICE!!! :10sign:

Back-in-the-day I have introduced a lot of kids to fishing, dove & waterfowl hunting, their first deer or turkey, camping, hiking, canoeing, ect...Recently moved to a brand new area of the country, my kids & their friends are all grown up now, and I'm gettin older & don't do quite as much work with inner-city/at-risk teens as I used to...Is there a PassItOn chapter out here in Denver? I would LOVE to turn a few more fresh, young kids on to a little controlled/supervised bird hunting behind my dog or take them fishing or even hiking for that matter! Any excuse to be out in God's wonderful world of creation is incredibly therapeutic for all!!!

We don't have a Pass It On Chapter in the Denver area...yet!

But that's not necessarily a requirement. We would be glad to refer you to a youth mentoring organization that would welcome your involvement...and match you with a youngster who needs the chance to get outdoors!

Feel free to give me a call at 316-290-8883.

Mike

@PassItOn - I'm one step ahead of you! Already looked over you guys website & went ahead and filled out an app w/BB in the Denver area as well...I am a minister & have decades of experience with mentoring youth (especially inner-city & at-risk), but I could use a direct pipeline or a little help in ferreting out those who are specifically interested in hunting & fishing. I LOVE taking kids along, it's better than re-living that very first hunt all over again!!!

I am far too busy with ministry & my home situation does not allow me to take on responsibility for starting up a Denver chapter of P.I.O. (already tried that as president of a local QDMA chapter in PA with great success, but paid heck w/the missus for it added on top of all my ministry ventures, hunting & fishing and other outdoor/sports - I learned my lesson real well)! ...But sure would be glad to participate if you ever get a chapter up & running here - you did get me in a renewed mood to seek out a few brand new kids to introduce to hunting & fishing this year in the meantime!

Crp, You better stick to the casper area, for speed goats, Deer are hard to bet, in this area, mulies and whitetails, around casper and dougles, you will not beat. Whitetails, around the platte river, are great. Mule deer around casper are monsters. Speed goats, Anywhere around Walton Wy, There is several world records in that area, of the state of wyoming. Gas hills, is the king area of speed goats. @20 plus inches common. casper has big speed goats around pathfinder and all the ways to rawlins. The biggest mules I saw last year are around the ferris range. We took a 32" 5x5 Last year, just outside of pathfinder, Not to far from miricale mile. We took a 7x7 Bull elk not far form this sight. you wiil have a hard time beating wyoming for big game. mt, idaho, Alaska, Maybe. IMO:)

I'll call BS on the 20 plus inch pronghorn:rolleyes:

I chuckle jmac- you're in Arizona, and say maybe- tons of public land in Colorado- you'll never find a place better than Alaska for BIG game

you went on guided hunts correct

jmac, you tool read the link! 20 inch pronghorn are not "common" if you think they are you are a fool or a liar. The pronghorn on the link is from ARIZONA not Wyoming!

it's all good-

I've hunted Alaska on my own- bull moose and double shovel caribou- you think a 7X7 elk is all that big- I don't

I've seen elk racks for sale in many places in Colorado

I've also seen many places where the big elk are in pens

I think you're talking to hear yourself talk

YOU live in sw nebraska, YOU dont live in WYOMING, so why are jumping on my rear end, When i was only trying to help CRP, which started this thread. I dont want any more hate mail, about this thread, you dont believe me fine. I'll admit you have to hunt for them, but they are there.
