Anthony Kansas

Anyone have information about the quail population around Anthony, Kansas? I have a chance to go down and hunt some private ground there this coming weekend.

No time like now to find out. If I told you there were no quail there and you never went you may miss out on some primo private land with great habitat and loaded with birds.

Go forth and hunt is what I say! You may have a honey hole.

Hunt it! And get the Walk-In Hunting atlas to see what's around there or on the way.

Good luck.

I'd JUMP at the opportunity!

That is what I am thinking. The land is a hunting lease and has not been bird hunted this year. I have done really well on quail this year here. Had to take 3 weeks off for a back surgery but got back after it yesterday. Was told the pheasant numbers were not good there. I am partial to quail anyway.

I have a cousin that did some harvesting down around there -- he didn't see much when they were in the combine.

But -- I'd still go, what do you have to lose, but time and fuel?

Used to be pretty good down that way. Many, many years ago i had college friend from there and he talked quite a bit about their success. Lot of deer hunting down there these days. I'm sure if you find the right habitat you'll find birds.

While I haven't looked lately, I think there's not much WIHA in the area.

Headed down to Anthony Friday night to hunt Saturday and Sunday. We are hunting some leased land that has not been bird hunted in at least 2 years. Hopefully will come back with some good stories and pictures.

Found good numbers of quail. Temperature, wind and lack of moisture was tough on the dogs. Hunted about 6-7 hours total and found 10 covies of quail. Very few pheasants.

The temperatures were unfortunate, but sounds like you got some good contacts! I'd hang onto that friend with the lease:)

Absolutely will. Hard to figure quail in such good numbers. Very little feed where we hunted.

As horrible as the drought we experienced was -- when we got some rain finally - it made the habitat more conducive for them.

Some areas this bounceback may only be temporary until the grass becomes a matted jungle again. And quail do not need grain fields if you are referring to feed, they have zero need for it when the right habitat is present.

Husker hit the nail on the head. Bobwhite select for wild seed most of the time and grain food sources aren't needed. We just need a quality spring and summer where there isn't a lot of extremes or hail. We're got plenty of broodstock and should be prepared for a big bump if we get the proper conditions. Pray for boring weather and we'll have a less than boring season next fall!!!
