Another Great Day Afield In CO

Went to a completely different area than the usual yesterday & had to scratch for em' a little harder this time around - but still had some beautiful textbook flushes in some of the prettiest CRP grass-cover I have ever seen (not too bad for this late in the season)...Two of us & three dogs burned up many MILES of boot leather all-day-long in some BIG CRP patches & loved every minute of it!!!

I was almost able to post a tongue-in-cheek funny on here about how it was not a very fun day at all because I only got to shoot three times - but oh the pressure of that last bird in a possible 3-for-3, & the Good Lord always sees to it that there is something to help keep us humble when the ol' head starts to swell a little too much! :D

The finest moment of the day came late in the afternoon on the very last pass, with the CRP grass all awash in the low-hanging sun's bright yellow backlight - it was like walking in the middle of a fine painting or being in a cream-of-the-crop classic upland hunting story!...With birds already in the bag, it didn't even bother us that we hardly saw or got up anything on that particular pass - just enjoyed the quiet moment/beautiful scenery & watching the dogs work! The only bird we got up on the entire pass, was when we were almost back at the truck at the last moment of legal shooting-light - it came up directly behind my partner & flew straight over the top of his head, offering two "PERFECT" air-ball shots - it was almost as if the bird was waving goodbye & saying, "Y'all come back now, ya hear"!

Man I need to get back out there. Quit telling these stories of success and I won't be as miserable. It has only been a week and I'm going crazy. Our four month old daughter has me tied to home a bit more than last year. I think I made it out east about a dozen times last year. This year will probably be around half that. Oh well, she's worth the agony.

Sorry, didn't mean to rub it in Chad... :) I'm only up one day on your half-dozen days out & your new daughter is way more important than too much time spent afield - It's just that I am on my 4th dog over the last 20+ years with much success hunting waterfowl, dove & some limited quail, but prior to moving to CO a little over a year ago I had to drive 500-1000 miles just to see what a wild rooster even looked and acted like! Needless to say, I am like a little kid in a candy store!!!...Also, we are just coming out of almost 3 yrs of a nasty, debilitating chronic illness & much chronic pain for my wife - I haven't been able to do much hunting or fishing at all the previous couple of years, so with a little reprieve lately I've been kind of like a racehorse blowing out of the gate!

Nice one Swellcat, you nailed my southern speak slip-up right on the head - that bird was flying due south though! :D

Good work!. I've been getting out too. It's been the usual of long range flushed birds and seeing a ton on private land while driving. I blew it and missed one the other day. My dog has yet to get her first wild bird, but it's great to see these numbers in CO.

HHR,
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying Colorado. It's a great state with countless opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts. No problem rubbing it in; I'm glad someone is able to get out and enjoy themselves. And I'm glad to hear your wife is through the battle she was fighting.
