Annual flight of the pheasant

We sat out last night at a local spot I seem to have done every year since coming to SD. I affectionately refer to this event as the "Flight of the Pheasant". We just watch pheasants run and fly into this traditional roosting spot.

From about 1/2 hour before sunset till dark we saw about 100 birds move in to that slough and about 75% were roosters which to me indicates a good hatch. I was encouraged and I think the 2 locals with me were also surprised.
I have seen more in past years but we also have a lot more cover now where birds can roost.

Also got an email last night from one of my top camp owners who I find to be very conservative and he said "We have plenty of birds".

Off to video Boars Nest today. Will keep you posted.
