And thus it begins

The longest week of the year.

I've read all the doom and gloom reports and yet, I still don't care. Socks and I will be hitting the field plenty, as my bosses have told me, "If you have to hunt, you have to hunt as long as you get your stuff done." I warned them there might be snowy mornings when I'm unreachable or there might be gaps in my time card for golden hour hunts.

We took a mini trip to Nebraska for a taste of what's to come this past weekend. Our goal wasn't to kill anything, but rather to get my domestic terrorist to hunt for me, and not for himself. He did pretty well even with skittish birds behaving weirdly and now I'm ready for the two of us to take to the field. Team Black GSP year two coming up.

He had locked up on a single and waited until I got there and kicked to move. As I did, I saw the single flush some 20 yards away from us on the left. Didn't matter, he held until I was there.

I'm curious where you got your pup? The reason I ask is I have a 10 month old all black GSP mix.

Go get em! I like the dog. I have an 11 month old all black GSP as well! His first season. Wondering how long it will take to hear someone ask what happened to my lab's tail.

OMG! So many people think Socks is a lab. I had a prof from the local college ask me "So is that a lab?"
I said "No, he's a GSP."
"Are you sure?"
"Uh, relatively? It says so on his papers."

Almost as if I didn't know my own dog's breed.

I tend to like more traditional bird dog colors but was in the market for a pup and he was the only one left in the litter. He is going to make a very fine dog. Very happy with my pick.

Orignally, I was taken with Socks. But his brother was growing on me as I was walking all of them at times, working on some "whoa" and "easy" commands. Socks was very independent, and he loved to watch the world from a corner of the kennel. The whole family was out there one October day last year, and I was petting everyone from a chair while Socks was still in his corner watching the world along with eyeing me. The pack moved away to which suddenly I felt Socks leaning on me. He put a paw on my thigh and I said "Socks, what are you doing?" There was another paw on my thigh and suddenly in a flash, he was on his back feet with both paws on my shoulders looking me in the eye as if to say "Knock it off, you're my human."

I knew he picked me at that point.

I don’t believe it’s near as gloomy as people are saying. From what I’m hearing there are going to be a lot of birds shot opening day. Good luck this weekend.
From what I’ve seen and heard from last season, and so far this year, is that there are more birds around than there’s been in some time. Obviously it depends on where you are, and they definitely have a long ways to go, but things might just be looking up a bit. I sure hope so.

I think I'll keep feeding him. He hunted with his dad today and it was incredible to see them running together at times, and then hunting for the gun. They covered a ton of real estate and both had several solid points with Socks getting to have some rock hard honors on his dad's points. It was truly a glorious morning.

Very businesslike look on that dog's face. A keeper for sure!

One of the best dog-choosing stories I've heard! I have a 9+ YO lab mix that kinda did the same thing. I have two younger ones that I love dearly, but man, I'm going to miss her when she's gone. Arthritis sucks.
