All Amped Up!

Well it never fails, every bird dog I've ever had always knows when it's time!
Dugan our Springer has been getting more excited with each passing day and tonight he's border line crazy! Some how they know the difference between a clay bird shooting outing and the real thing.

Tomorrow is opening day grouse and for us it kicks off the upland season. We use the first week of grouse as a dry run for the upcoming Pheasant season, making sure we haven't forgotten or overlooked anything.

Gentlemen...this is the time of year we live for!

Good luck tomorrow. I won't be able to get out for grouse but I may get a chance to do some fishing close to home. Don't feel too bad for me. I ran the dogs today at the club close to home and they found 2 hens, 1 rooster, 1 covey of 20+ quail and a couple of singles. It was nice to see the quail flush!

Share some pictures if you get a chance.

Were you able to move any birds?

No hunting for me but I did pull in an 18 inch rainbow in the afternoon.

It was a perfect fall day with temp around 34 degrees in the morning. As soon as we left camp we flushed a woodcock not 20 yards from the camp, Mr "A' will be happy to know that we are still praciting shoot-n-release! We hunted what seemed like miles of great cover with no flushes of grouse or woocock. Then low and behold when we get back to our own property we flush a grouse from under an Autom Olive bush I planted years ago. Today was probably the only day we would have taken a bird on our land, we usualy give them a pass.

Dugan was great today! In the one picture you can see a porky that he pushed up a tree. If he had been ranging out to far it might have been trouble

All in all a great day to be afield!

Nice Rainbow Brian!

Sounds like a good day for you guys. I bet Dugan was happy to be out. Looks like the weather will cool down for next week. Good luck next Saturday!

It was a near perfect day weather wise!

Hey, that was quite a lot of birds you flushed on your club's property! Will you be going there opening day?

I plan to go there early on Saturday before I have to get back home for flag football. If I don't get my limit in the morning then I may go to the gamelands in the afternoon. I did that last year and I had the gamelands to myself on opening day. I'll have to hunt close to home during the week after work.

Are you going to your camp next weekend?

Not exactly sure, we have a traditional spot for opening day that seems like I've been hunting forever. But it's only good for the first hour or so before the crowds reach us. We have the following week off, so this year we are thinking of hitting some locations around camp with a couple of overnights, then across the state for a crack at those wild birds!

It's going to be a LONG week!

Will this make the wait longer or shorter? I ran the dogs today (Sunday) and got a few pictures.

That did it...Im finished! :(

And then I find out Mr. A is on his way to N.D.

Hang in there, FLDBRED. It will get better each day.

Hopefully Mr. A will let us know how things go out west. I've never made it out there and I'm not sure when I will get a chance to make it.

Have you ever gone out west for a hunt, FLDBRED?

Yes Brian, I've been to Iowa a few times. The first time I went,as luck would have it, I met a former PA. Game Warden. He was then working for the Iowa Fish + Game. We changed all our plans around on his recommendations.

One of the interesting things he told us was that, Iowa had never matched the birds per square mile of his former location in Pa. from the 70's. Imagine that!

We had great trips out there! We've been planning trips for the last couple of years and just haven't pulled the trigger on them for one reason or another.

You should really try to get out there, BOTH your dogs and yourself deserve it! You won't regret it. I would think about S.D., N.D., Montana, and I always thought Minn. was a sleeper, plus it has excellent grouse hunting. Tomorrow is promised to know one my friend!
