I came across this from yesterday. As we all know the "great dust storms" of the dirty 30's were the world's only man-made ecological disasters. We get told that we are light years ahead of productionwise, these kind of things are gone, because of enlightened management. A couple of dry years, here we go again! People who do the same practices, and expect a difference result are destined to repeat past failures. Some of us in forum were eye witnesses. for some reason I can't get it to download. It's at Kansascity.com. Fall tilling for wheat, in the middle of a drought, created dust bowl proportioned storm. A lot of evidence say this is the first of a 10 year progression of drought years. Just like the thirties. With the ground cover out there, is anyone betting on this be the last time?

I have to admit I am surprised at the amount of fall tillage going on. Are disk and ripper are parked for the fall.

Actually, I understand this, we have a really bad year for crops, even in KC we had crops that withered. Last year we had flooding, this year drought, A guy has to ask when the right time to double down, till and seed wheat. Thinking it will be better next year. If you are thinking that you should play it safe, well safe doesn't pay the bills, and crops can't grow with out being put in. I wish we could get by with smaller fields, grass diagonal to the prevailing wind direction, in the western great plains we saw strip farming for soil moisture and saving it from wind, hedgerows we have spend 40 years hogging out. We will be back to the WRA,CCC programs right away. Heck we already have the unemployment to fill the ranks!

No, they don't learn. Nothing to do now that the harvest is out but gouge plow and cut down what's left in the belief that next spring they can plant every square inch.

I believe I brought this up as a coming event the last couple years. History will in fact repeat itself. It will be here soon. This year has been terrible for dust. Some just need to learn the hard way I guess.

Two of a couple of federal work projects that in the depression did road works, planted hedgerows, resodded the blowouts, reforested the BLM, and government lands, almost all of the campsites and facilities in National Parks were done then. They did road building, bridges, dam construction, some units did Rural Electrical to all farms, strung wire for telephone services. Included architects, engineers, farmhands, shoe salesman. These guys lived in camps, were payed by the government to do projects that the government believed were important infrastructor wise, things we would use in the future. Interestingly enough they quaility work, we are using there projects in everyday life now. They had pride in the accomplishments which stand as the testamant today. Look at almost all federal projects that were beun in the 30's, you will see there logo on the project marker. we grew out of the depression, or WWII did, and the program, which had a sunset law written in in the beginning, expired. All eligble men and women were busy with the war effort. It may be we are like on a war footing, with now, to preserve the land. By the way, it was the Federal Government that did this, not the Farm Bureau. but they were glad for the help, and kept many on the farm. When your kids die from dust inhalation, and your sod blows away to create dust in Washington D.C. Conservation becomes everybodys high priority. The articles are correct. As I say, we get all kinds of drivel about how we are so much smarter that the poor slobs who farmed in the depression, and this could not happen now, because we have the superior intellect.....sure looks like it!
