Aaargh! Bird dog down!

We finally have bird season here and get a great opening day. My English Setter, Sally, was just on fire opening day. We hit public ground and have kept the private contacts in reserve. I took a work schedule that gives me every Friday off for three day weekends. Even bought extra shells.

And now it appears my girl has a sprained foot, won't put weight on it, trying to get in to the vet now. I guess I could go without a dog, but damn....

Had to vent with people who will understand...

It sucks having a dog go down right at the season. I hope it heals fast and you can back out there again.

What kind of Setter do you have? Mine comes with lines from Set'r Ridge and October Setters.

Hate to hear that. I have setters too and it sucks when they get hurt. Hopefully she will be back in the field soon. Glad to hear you found some birds. We are coming out in 2 weeks.

I have had that happen to me several times. Having a dog get injured happens more often than you might think.

I always like to have at least 2 dogs of hunting age all the times if possible.

You could also have a bruised pad or check for a thorn between the toes.

2 years ago Ox found some razor wire and sliced his foot wide open. I thought it was terrible missing those weeks of the season. But the season is pretty long and there was still plenty of hunting done that year.

I can't wait till Ox turns 6 and I can get a second dog to help out in that situation.

I agree check for a thorn. In SD mine ended up with one in his foot and hunted three legged for much of the trip. I soaked it in warm water and I think it helped. It doesn't take much of one to give them a bunch of discomfort.

Well, I'm still not sure what happened- but all is well.

At some point during the day yesterday morning things worked themselves out and the wife came home at noon to a dog that was on all 4 and rowdy. Its like nothing ever happened. I had rooted around for a thorn, etc as much as I could but couldnt find anything. Could she have dislocated something in a toe and instantly relieved when it snapped back in?

Rick, mine is a Ryman from Round River Setters and has some Setter Hills and Old Hemlock in her among others. October shows up in her momma's side also.

Long ago and far away, a setter I had started favoring her left front foot after a week-end walking a farm. I examined that foot microscopically and could not find anything that showed damage, bruising, swelling, penetration...nada.

Couple of days later, took her to the vet, who found a small puncture wound, probably from a thorn. He said it must have penetrated the skin, left some bacteria or debris and withdrawn from her. He opened and cleaned the wound, gave her some antibiotics, and sent us on our way.

I swear I never would have looked for a self-closing stab wound.

Glad your pup is back on her (four) feet.
