3 1/2 year old guide dog quit hunting

My opinion is that he is just not a hunter.... Just because he has a good pedigree or was from a guide does not mean he is a hunter.... Who knows how his training went and how well he really liked it... I have seen dogs get hours and hours of training and given the chance they want nothing to do with hunting... I think that some dogs are over trained too early in their life... Just think he is only 3.5 just becoming a mature dog... don't give up on him my friend... Might try to make it fun again rather than so much stress... He knows how to hunt...

You could be right. But open the kennel and he is the first in the dog box.
This is a puzzler.:(

Bob do you know if anybody used an E-collar on him. You stated quote. "We hunted him twice last year and he pissed me off so much I put him in the truck". Could he have done that before and got a strong zap from a e-collar? It has been known to happen, one strong zap and they quit. If you can check into it. The trainer/guide should stand behind the dog. He has more at stake with a mad you, than a happy you.........Bob

Bob. I am going to try working on him myself.:(

nice to know they don't stand behind there dogs I am in the market for a new pointer female and was lookiing at them as a prospective place to get 1 not now thanks for the info beaglebob

I've not heard a single good thing about them period.

Just out of curiousity, what was the dog doing that pissed you off, and how did you react to it?

Not judging, just curious.

wont hunt goes back to the truck like he is scared. guns do not bother him.:(

Have you tried running him without an e-collar? or anything that resembles it in size and weight. Try a checkcord in the back yard and a planted bird in the open, where he can see, it will get you on the track to see if bird contact is an issue. Use a pigeon or better yet a quail, likely a bird he did not have an issue with. See what happens. The visual is important because if it's the bird contact he will blink it, by acting like he doesn't see it.

Update On Sport:
I had Sport out without the collar and planted a few quial and he acted better than he has been. He new the first two where there but did not point. I flushed them and he half way made a move to chase but came back to my side. Next set he did the same thing but this time I shot and he retrieved both to hand. I was out of birds. He seemed very happy. I do think he was burned with a collar. Played fetch with the dead birds and right to hand every toss. I will get 20 birds next outing and see what happens. He may be fixable:confused::eek:

I dont know what is up with him. Had him out yesterday we shot several birds and he acted like he could care less. Shot another one 15 minutes or so later and he bee lined to the truck jumping on the sides trying to get in.
When we got back to the truck he was under it tucked up to the rear tire.
So yeah he is gun shy sometimes and sometimes he aint.:( I have talked to a lot of folks for over a year and just cant figure what the dog has going on. He was at one time a darn good dog. We took dead birds and played fetch with him and perfect retrieves everytime. He was happy to do it.
Maybe he got peppered before we got him, I just dont know. I dont have enough talent to fix him. I am still kinda new at this game.

Sounds like he got shock collar abused at some point. Obviously, he likes birds and being with you.

Hello Mr Britchaser,
Well I had him out this past Monday and the first 3 birds he pointed like a champ. I flushed and shot them and perfect fetch to hand. 10 minutes later he would not leave my side. We still had birds out so I put my GSP on the ground and she found the rest. On the first bird she pointed Sport half assed backed her. I flushed and shot that bird and he was gone back to the kennel like shot out of a cannon. One minute he is good next he sucks..:confused:I plan to keep working him.I have 50 quail left .:(

not to be disrespectful, but why didn't you stop after the first three birds? seems like you could have ended the session on a positive put him up in the kennel and then continued on with the GSP

based on the previous posts, It seems like every time you "push your luck" with the dog it ends with a negative response

I am not a trainer and don't know your dog, but it seems like that if you end on a positive and build from there you'll have a better chance of "fixing" him

he might be collar shy, he might be gun shy I don't know, but the only thing I do know is that you need to go back to the basics and start over and remember to keep it fun and always end on a positive

maybe. we will keep working him.

Sounds like excellent progress. As for the dog sticking by your side, it sounds like a bit of insecurity and uncertainty. I'm sure more patience will pay dividends. He believe he needs 100% positive reinforcement at this point; no stick, all carrot.

Well how did this dog turn out?? The rest of the story?

This is a on going story. We laid him up this week and let him watch from the kennel, kinda like the chain gang . He is dying to get out. His next session is Friday... He is going to watch others point ,shoot and retrieve birds till then..
Gotta get him hungry..

That can do wonders Bob:thumbsup: hope it works out.

Mr FC,
I think this is the only way to go. Get him dying to go. He did good last time out untill I pushed him to far. Feels like a rescue dog at this point..lol
Gotta give him a chance to get back to where he was at his peak. I know it is a mental thing. One second he looks like a pro then it falls apart. Going to be interesting figure this one out. Thing is I like this dog or he would have been gone a long time ago..:(

keep at it Bob and keep us updated

the only thing not fixable about a dog, is its owner :D
