2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

Didn't suspect you as the type to mislead folks with two assertions that are 100% backward.
I get the part that there are plenty of pheasants there. But are you suggesting anyone harvesting them there is shooting fish in a barrel? 😛 ;)

What is it about the roosters in that county that makes them so easy to limit on?

There are an unholy number of pheasants & very, very few hunters. The public land birds are almost like private land dummies that have never been hunted. It's unreal. 😆

OK, the last three posts have me confused. Are folks here playing games to keep non-residents out of their areas?.

Let me be absolutely clear. If you made a rectangle the four corners consisting of SFalls, Alexandria, DeSmet and Brookings, that area is loaded with roosters and honestly they're not very challenging to hunt. I could go up around lake Thompson and limit in no time. Heck, you could even pop three hunting road ditches like a knuckle dragging savage.

Get up north anywhere within 45 minutes of Kampeska and there's less birds but they're wiley as hell. If your dog even farts in the field you might as well pack it up and move. I've never been able to figure out why. Better hunters up that way?

Thanks Bob Peters, much appreciated.

I wasn't clear on what's going on with the following: From A5 Sweet 16 Didn't suspect you as the type to mislead folks with two assertions that are 100% backward, if this is directed at me, or what> Wish folks would be clear, just here to find a place to vacation and bring my dog to hunt.

I'll send you a message.

No, not directed at you. Some of us on here like to give others crap about how easy & plentiful "their" birds are, compared to "our own" smarter, tougher ones close to home.

If you're planning on public land in SD, there are several great areas of the state. About the only place East River that I'd probably avoid if traveling here to hunt is the extreme SE corner. Everywhere else, birds may not be easy, but they're plentiful whether they let you see them or not. Areas of the state differ. Some places Waterfowl Production Areas are king. Some places CREP. Some places Walk-In Areas. Just depends where you end up. But wherever that is, concentrate on those 3 types, plus the occasional Game Production Area. Don't waste your time with other public offerings.

😆😆 For a relative novice, I'm impressed. You've got South Dakota, its pheasants, & its most infamous hunters pretty well figured out. Funny stuff.

Still tryin' to crack Montana. Goose 🪿 plays his cards close to the vest. I know in Big Sky Country that Hilger is good, sometimes you can accidentally hunt private ranches for years without knowing it, there might be birds on the high Canadian, hunt with gooses cousin if you want permission on private ground(but be prepared to dodge bbs or high tale it out of there when a turkey or combine is peppered). I also know to avoid public that is loaded with suburbans and high-brow hunters. Don't pay to hunt. Don't hunt with these video guys. Avoid blue-blood Gucci ranches with pen raised birds. And don't dump mud where anybody will see you, that's low bagger.

Bob - you may want to trademark that and publish it. Spot on.

Not understanding what you're saying?.

Sorry, it's a long and winding tale of sarcasm, but when A5 said I've got tons of uneducated pheasants with no hunting pressure in this area, I countered by saying they're all pen raised pheasants. Neither of which are true.
