2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Off the schneide! Took the daughter out with us in the light drizzle, we stayed near trees, when the sun started popping, I saw a flash of white in the open, my adopted pound dog was full sniff and flushed it, one shot and it went down. Was calling for her to fetch in tall grass and had to hit tone. But she was already on it. I've come to realize she doesn't fetch birds on the ground only water, on land she stands on top of them. Her attitude changed and she started trying to sniff pheasant after, hope this is a turning point. This is only her second one.

Congrats! Love to see the spark turn on.

Funny that you mention her standing on top of the fallen bird. All of my dogs have done the same when a bird goes down. It doesn’t bother me like it might others. I know they’re on the bird, and I have a good guess where it fell. The only time I remember a retrieve to hand was when I shot my first rooster, and he fell right in the middle of a pond.

I went out Saturday with my dad to a new spot I scoped out. I’ve been to a couple new spots this year and have been pleasantly surprised. Saw 4 roosters and 2 hens. Bad shooting and gun issues were to blame for leaving empty handed but we really only had shots at 2 birds. Beautiful habitat at this place though. I’m glad I branched out.

Tried this morning just as the rain was fizzling out and got this nice bird. I think I’ve seen 4 roosters to every hen this year. Usually isn’t near that ratio but I’m not complaining. Fun fun start to the season.IMG_7148.jpeg

Tried for an hour or so after the heavier rain finally stopped yesterday on some stocked DNR land. Wasn't expecting to find much left on a Sunday afternoon, which turned out to be the case, but sunsets like these are just as good as a bird on some days in my opinion.

Hunting around home has been great in the last week or so, killed 7 in our last 4 hunts which is great by WI standards. Been flushing plenty of birds, fortunate I live in a part of the state that has a healthy wild population. I’ve been sticking to weekday hunts which has seemed to help. Been seeing a lot of pressure. Killed a limit everyday on our SD trip for opener, I’ll head back again in January.

Been playing around with the GoPro this year and I’m really glad I bought it. When my old bird dog is gone I’ll enjoy looking back at some of our hunts together.

That was my original reason for getting a gopro. One of my regrets in life was not getting my older dog on video in her prime. My younger dog is 4.5 years old and I have a ton of great video (just need a computer system and time to process it!).

Dog has been neglected since we got back from ND.....went up to Bay de Noc chasing walleyes this past weekend.....so ran out this morning to get the dog some work.....nice limit....Northern Kettle Moraine area.

Yesterday we flushed 6 with the only 2 with color getting up just a little too wild. Today we flushed about the same but two parrots held just a little too tight. Hunting continues to be good mid-week. Luckily my new gig allows me to get out a couple times a week.

Getting some time in before the orange army this weekend! I like it.

@grossklw do you plan to share the GoPro videos? It looks like you're getting some great action with it. Nice that you can get out during the week. I used to get out after work but not anymore after the time change ☹️

Yeah but that's an off-season project, I uploaded a few quick ones to my instagram @luke_grossy if you want to check it out. I'll eventually have longer length stuff on youtube in Jan/Feb. Not trying to become famous or anything, it's pretty much for me to look back on and something to show my kids down the line of what all our dogs looked like in the field.

Your near me. I haven't hunted pheasants in WI yet this year but always try to do at least one. We're west of Kewauskum and over towards Theresa.

I'm in Fond du Lac......I have a few decent spots in the Theresa Marsh that give up birds, especially later in the year. Most of my other time I'm in Fond du Lac County and into Sheboygan County on public. Born and raised here.

My man 🙌🏼 That’s record time
1st bird git up as a pair in some willows/cedars thicket....only had a shot at one.
2nd bird got up on a fence line from dirty cut/picked/chopped cornfield on one side, CRP grass on other with 7 other roosters.....completely surprised me with that number! Thought I was imagining things!
Dog didn't enough break a sweat! All within about 50p yards of the truck!
