2015-16 Hunting Reports & Pictures

As a true blue amateur to this sport I had my best weekend hunting of the year, all on public land! I have neglected bringing my 8 year old springer out in the field because in the past she would consistently run 50 yards up so I always brought trusty 10 year old black lab. Anyways the springer was an absolute beast in the field. Never traveled further than 20 yards away and she got her first MN bird ever!
On Saturday we we flushed up two hens and three roosters. All were holding tight, a buddy and myself knocked down one of the roosters. The other rooster we shot at was one of those times where you ask yourself, how did we both miss that bird. Sunday was a bit slower, we flushed one rooster and again managed to miss this bird. Great weekend to be out and most of the ponds where I was hunting were walkable. Glad to get myself back into this sport, the dogs just love it!

Went out on Sat. we did not move as many birds as we did last weekend. We got our limit of 6 and had some great work from a couple of the puppies. They have come a long way this past 4 months.

Man I'd love to get a 3 bird limit! I guess the places I frequent aren't in the prime pheasant range.

I went out this morning. The spot I wanted to start my hunt at was occupied so I walked a fence line that didn't look really promising. My spaniel flushed a rooster right on the edge out of some thin cover. Having done some poor shooting lately, I reminded myself to take my time and get a good shot off. I hit it, but not hard. My pup had a nice retrieve on this still active bird.

Later I had my pointer out and we flushed 4 more hens. All and all a good morning with good dog work.

A couple pictures from hunting last weekend. This will most likely be the most hunting the mutt ever gets. I wish I had started when she was younger. She's got a good nose and nice retrieve. The natural drive is sometimes lacking though.

The DD should be home in March.

Hunted in southwest mn yesterday. Shot two birds and flushed about 5 more. Flushed and saw way more roosters then hens. Lots of water on the ground still so I'm glad I had my knee high rubber boats with. Had a good time and my golden made some nice retrieves. The areas I did best had corn by them.

My Vizsla and I were out last Saturday working some tall grass when all of the sudden he erupted with sneezes. Must have sneezed about a dozen times in a row. I gave him some water and we carried on - he sneezed here and there for the rest of the day. It's now Wednesday and he is still sneezing and he has his tail(what's left after getting docked as a pup) tucked like he did something wrong. He also doesn't seem to have the normal amount of energy.

My question - anybody have any ideas on what he might have snorted? I'm going to give it a few more days before I take him to the vet.

Not sure what he got into, but coming from the son-in-law of vet...don't wait until the weekend to take him in!

First question you'd be asked is, is the dog eating and crapping?

Thank you mutthunt.

I was just reading some things online about "foxtail" and it has me all worried. I'm going to try to get him in tomorrow afternoon.

Lovenstein - I wouldn't wait either. Go to the vet. It may be nothing, but.... My red setter had a large lump on his side last winter and they weren't sure what it was. Thought it might be cancer. Well, they removed it and inside a large lump of scar tissue they found two tiny grass awns. They may have penetrated the skin and stayed and encysted there, but he may have inhaled them and they (Luckily) passed thru the lungs and encysted in the body. Seems almost impossible, but it happens. The vet was betting on inhalation. If they stay in the lung or travel to the heart you got real trouble! Mine turned out fine, just set me back some $$, but the dog is fine. Good luck.

So I took the pooch to the vet today. The gal didn't seem too convinced that it was a grass awn but they don't have a scope. She took a look in his nose with a light and found redness and irritation. She gave us some antibiotics and a steroid and told me to monitor him over the weekend. If he is still sneezing and has a bloody nose or green mucous - time to escalate it.

Man's best friend is an understatement here. Damn dog means the world to me. Hopefully he will be alright. Thanks for the replies - I appreciate the first hand account RBinder.

Can sleep a lot better at night though I'll bet lovenstein, with answers and a little reassurance. Sometimes that's worth the $$$ in itself. I know the feeling!

Hope he shows some progress over the weekend!

Careful now. All ice in the metro is now gone. Would assume even in rural MN across pheasant country that if the ice is not gone - it will certainly not hold man or dog.

No birds left stay home

Not sure I'm quite ready to start deep cleaning the gun just yet Gustav ;) My brother and I decided to take a break for a couple weekends because of non freezing temps and scheduled the upcoming in hopes we would have freeze by then. Well we know that wont be happening, but still going down Friday Saturday and looking for walkable ground. Will we be able to bust any cattails before end of season? Chances are starting to look pretty slim..

Lovenstein - no problem giving the "first hand account". I know what you mean when you say "Damn dog means the world to me". Mine too! Probably most others on here too! That period of time between the first vet visit and post-surgery good news was Hell! Hope yours turns out fine. Good luck.

I'm planning on going out this Friday morning to a spot or two just west of the Cities. Given that there is no snow or ice and it's pretty late in the season, I'm not expecting much if anything. But might as well? There are only a few more weekends left in the season...

Im headed out Sunday. It looks like they might get some snow in the next few days. Not sure if it will still be around by then. Still not sure were I want to go. Good luck Friday!
