16 gauge

Looks like I’m going to be seeing the insides of mine. The gunsmith I wanted to look it over won’t do it. I can’t fix much, but I can at least get in there and look for rust and lube it up I guess. Refinishing won’t happen now unless I find someone that actually knows something about it.
Wipe her down with an oily rag and go with it. I know how you feel, but on the other hand almost a sin to destroy that patina. Just think if those scratches could talk!

Looking like this is what I’ll do. I just feels rough when I open it. I think it needs to be torn down. I’m betting there is no lube of any kind on the internals. I’ll have to learn how to take it down.

Good luck! Don't over tighten that butt bolt.

16 seems like the perfect gauge for all around use, only problem is finding ammo variety, especially if you want target or light load 8 shot. I get my light loads from Natchez Shooting. I have several 16’s. For a beater, drop in the mud gun, the Steven’s 555e is a nice gun for under $800 (check deals on gunbroker) assuming you are right handed. The one I got had amazing nice wood for what I paid.

If you can only have 1 gun in 16 though, I would suggest looking at FAIR. You get a tremendous quality gun for the money and usually upgraded wood. The action is scaled to 16ga too and not built on a larger 12ga receiver. I don’t think they have any XLIGHT though in 16 but the weight in steel is not bad. If you want a lightweight 16 for long carry days like I wanted, then have a look at the Rizzini line. The BR110 Light Luxe is a good utility model. I splurged and got the Artemis Light (similar to Aurum Light but has side plates) and they offer a LEFT hand stock for it.

Some have recommended the Franchi Instinct which are also great looking guns but I’ve read about some having trigger and other failures which might not be a factor for an occasional use gun.

If you’re still looking, I have decided to sell all my guns and have one 16 left - a Citori Superlight in very good condition, with a full range of extended aftermarket choke tubes. $2000 plus shipping. I also have a lot of 16 ga ammo, but I can’t imagine it would be worth it to ship.

Actually just really now looking. Spent the last couple weeks driving back to AK from the southwest. Have 4 months of mail to go over and etc. from road trip. Stopped at a few gun shops in lower 48 but nothing rang my chimes.
