    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

I'm just an Osceola away from my slam, don't know if I'll ever get to Florida for one. Maybe some day. I need to get a Tom Merriam. Only Merriam I shot was a Jake. It counts but it's like shooting a spike buck, it's a deer but not something to brag about or put on the wall haha

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

Hybrids are almost impossible to tell in the wild. Main thing to look for when targeting a Rio in country where a Merriam can also be found is the tail fan and the wings. The fan on a Rio will be more buff colored. Cream/tannish. Whereas a true Merriam will have that snow white fan. The wing...

Looking to add a gsp in the future

Don't be intimidated on testing requirements. I'm assuming the requirements are to run a NAVHDA Natural Ability test? If so, the NA test is pretty simple to train for and is something anyone that has a versatile dog should train on. Not saying everyone needs to or should test, but what you train...

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

I do the same on public ground. Only time on public ground I use a blind is bow hunting to conceal the draw. I prefer being mobile and sitting next to a tree. Just feels like turkey hunting.

    Water in the field...

What I've found helps with my dog drinking right out of the bottle, is try and hold the bottle slightly above a 90 degree angle. If her head has to get too vertical, too much gets on her muzzle, at a 90 degree angle it's like drinking out of a garden hose for them. Still get the occasional...

    Feeding Time

Is eating anything in sight a lab thing? My dad had 2 labs when I was growing up, they were the same way. Food was devoured when it hit the bowl. Meanwhile both of my dogs, there's food in their bowl pretty much all day long as they just graze feed.

I like that contraption but man I don't like the price haha

    Water in the field...

What I do is I have a plastic milk crate which fits four, 1 gallon jugs perfectly. I just use old milk gallon jugs that I've rinsed out, fill each one and keep them in the crate and have the crate at the back of the truck. I keep my collapsible dog bowl in the crate too. Easy to grab just one...

    Feeding Time

Dogs are actually built differently than us. Dogs get 80-90% of their energy from fat, not calories. Which is why premium dog food has a high fat content. Whereas humans get the bulk of our energy from calories. Imagine if you ate a diet that consisted of 25% fat haha With this, a dog going...

    Feeding Time

No food in the morning for my dogs on the day of a hunt either. One thing I've tried (with mixed results) is spiking their water in the morning with a splash of Gatorade. Just a couple drops to give it some taste to make them want to hydrate up. Sometimes they drink a bunch, other times no more...

    STORING SHOT SHELLS

You could even try one of those Damp Rid buckets. I've never tried one but see them at the local hardware stores. Might be a cheaper alternative as a test for whatever room you store your shells in before buying a dehumidifier unit.

    STORING SHOT SHELLS

Chestles idea is more what I would do. Id try and control the humidity in the basement as a whole more so than the storage location.

    STORING SHOT SHELLS

If the shells are inside, I don't see a reason to need them to be stored in a completely non humid environment. Keeping them in a tote with the lid off is probably going to be less humid than in a sealed tote. As the temp in the tote rises from being enclosed, the warmer air can't escape and...

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

My guess is something got a hold of its fan as it was trying to escape from a coyote or something. Or possibly got rolled up by a vehicle. The tail fan is definitely messed up, but it's so consistently messed up that leads me to believe something had ahold of its fan.

    2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

I lost respect for KDWP and their officers after I called about some hunter harassment I was experiencing while turkey hunting there. Guy on the phone didn't seem to care, didn't even ask where it happened and didn't even want to go talk the guy after I saw his truck parked in his driveway down...

    Crate temperature monitor.

I'm sure many had their dogs in too hot of temps without knowing. Dogs can't tell us "christ it's hot in here" so until they get into dangerous, fatal territory where you're seeing them getting heat stroke, you'd never really know it.

    Uninsulated Boots??

My feet rarely get cold, but there's been times when it's sub zero they get a bit chilly. Prior to getting a new pair of insulated Crispis last summer, I pretty much hunted for years with just an uninsulated boot. I will say it's hard to have both worlds with an uninsulated boot. The pair of...

    Garmin Garmin ALPHA 300 + TT25 vs. Dogtra PATHFINDER2

As someone who has used an Alpha (100 and 300) for almost 8 years, I'd highly recommend Garmin. I can't speak for Dogtra stuff as I've never used it, but Garmin seems to be king of dog GPS equipment. It is pricey, but it definitely lasts. Id still have my Alpha 100 if the 300 upgrades didn't...
