    Your Experience With This?

A bird hunting camp that doesn't allow dogs in your dwelling is a red flag for me. All our motels in Iowa allow them. Sounds like a good place to shoot birds for people that rarely get the opportunity.

    Gobsmacked on public land!!!

Rude behavior has no geographical boundaries. Case in point, your comment.

    Warm + No Snow

I'm giving it one last shot this week once the rain clears. I can only assume they will be in the same places as last month since nothing has changed.

    Warm + No Snow

I have limited fast and early many times in Iowa. The downside is you have the rest of the day to kill if you are hunting the next day. We usually just drive around and get cleaned up for dinner early. AND wish we had brought fishing gear.

    Ground swatting

If safe, why not? It's hunting and the name of the game is to kill your intended quarry. A head shot on a standing bird saves meat and is a merciful death. Like turkey hunting. Considering it's legal then to each his own.

    Dog in Heat Questions

We put dog diapers on ours. They worked but it was a pain taking them on and off for bathroom breaks.

    Hunting this weekend

Sticking to ditches can be the best option all the way around. Especially near hunting areas the deer hunters push them out. I give deer hunters a wide birth. I won't grouse hunt at all during gun deer season.

    Golden Retriever question

My latest MN Golden is from Thunderstruck. Very athletic and lots of prey drive. As luck would have it I didn't get the brainiac of the litter but she's a pretty good hunter and a sweet girl.

Unpopular opinion - dog caught a hen

I still cant comprehend turning the law on yourself over such a mundane thing. Why would you bring the law into your life and risk a fine? Its just a bird and they are not endangered. They die every day. The one your dog caught or the one hen you accidentally shot in 15 years is a drop in the...

    Iowa hunting atlas?

Oh man! Those things are man traps. They have dropped me twice this season but luckily no injuries. BTW those maps are nice. Just remember to keep a pencil or pen with them and take notes every trip , year after year.

    Iowa report from today

My buddy and I had a very neat encounter with a local farmer on Sun morning. This after dodging the horse and buggies racing to church. We were running a ditch and ran into a man in the ditch running a skid steer. He walked a ways to my buddy, who didnt see him, when he stopped there to hunt...

    Iowa report from today

Stayed in Charles City. Hunted within a 40 mile radius. No other hunters in our motel. We figure because there isn't much public land in that region. We saw birds but mostly where we couldn't hunt them. I have no doubt there is some fine private land there. Drier than a popcorn fart. In my...

Just a friendly reminder about retrieving birds over the property line

No kidding. Like I'm going to torture the noblest of birds by carrying it a distance alive and afraid in my hands before ending it's misery . Never going to happen. The only guy doing that is the same one that calls the cops on himself when he accidentally shoots a hen or worse yet calls them...

Unpopular opinion - dog caught a hen

I'm going to call the warden on myself because my dog caught a hen!? That is literally the stupidest thing I have ever read on this site. Grow up.

    Iowa report from today

Tried NE Iowa this weekend and sorry we went. Beautiful country with much more deer cover but it was our worst weekend bird count this season. A real struggle. Sticking to the west going forward.

    Motels

Just finding one that takes dogs is the hard part. After that it's whatever they say. Our dog cost $20 per night extra last weekend. We have about 4 we rotate through depending on the area. One mainly. All are reasonable and accommodating. I love the sign I saw at the check in desk last...

Dry Aging (possession limit vs daily limit)

We used to clean our birds at the hotel or home. Now it's strictly on the side of the road. Throwaway stuff goes in a garbage bag and back to a garbage can. Except for maybe a single head we usually set up in the ditch grass for the eagle eyed road hunters. Lol

    Iowa report from today

Depends on your definition of road hunting. It is legal to walk on a dirt road or in the ditch to hunt in Iowa. Kevin is correct about driving. If you happen to see a bird while driving you can exit your vehicle, uncase/load your gun and go after it. Im not certain how far you must be from your...

    Dumping mud

Seriously, who doesn't know how to $hit outdoors?! Carry some tp or use vegitation. Destroy your own clothing? Lol

    Ditch hunting

Birds shot legally are not cheating. A ditch is a narrow field. The laws are clear on what you can and can't do and how to retrieve game on private land. I consider it a great privilege to have so much more area to hunt and not have to fight for position on public fields that are inevitably over...
