When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

I just talked to my buddy last week, he was hunting along the Nebraska border and had good luck on roosters and quail. Said they saw lots of birds. That's what I was referring to.

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

Pheasants: About 1986-2000 in Iowa. It was nothing to start at 0800 and have a limit before 1000. About 2007-2010 in Kansas, and as someone mentioned before, a four rooster limit in a few hours every time you went out. About 2011-2014 in Western Nebraska. A limit each and every day you went...

    Roger’s Toughman boots

I got a pair, they are in the box being returned. They didn’t fit well and I know they would hurt my left foot within a few miles.

    Bad luck

I hunted all day on Tuesday as my wife was working a 48 hour ER shift and when I got home I noticed one of my T-5 Garmin minis needed charged. I attached the charging clips as I always do and yesterday morning noticed they all showed green which means fully charged. I removed the clips and took...

    First day in Western Nebraska

I’m not a game biologist but I suspect it is a long list of things including but not limited to a couple of bad winters, a couple years of drought, some really bad hail storms, and a lack of food close to those areas of good cover! I have a full section of private CRP that I’m the only one that...

    Disappointed

I now live about 60 miles from the Sidney store. I used to go there several times a year just to browse. I bought a Merkel 1620 Combo, an AYA 4/53 Deluxe 16 ga and a mis-marked AYA 4/53 20 ga from the Gun Library! In the fall they had racks and racks of quality hunting clothing for upland and...

    cold to warm weather gear

I have a turtleneck base layer made by a long-out-of-business company called Wickers. I wear an orange and tan long sleeve hunting shirt over that with a strap vest. I'm good to down about 25* with that but if it's windy I might add a thin 511 Wind Stopper vest. Colder than that I have a blaze...

    Bird shooting lesson learned

This is why you shoot birds in the butt. Your eyes will alway find the center of what ever you are looking at. On Pheasants with long tails the center is their butt. If you concentrate on their head instead of the entire bird you will kill many more crossing shots than if you look at the...

Wild bird hunting might be cheaper than I thought

I hunt around my home, within 100 miles most of the time. I could have hunted yesterday and today, but it’s raining and I’m retired so there is tomorrow. Around here I go to see my dogs work! My 3 year old GSP has had a great year-so far, some really stylish points on pheasants and the more...

That would take some serious confidence, there is NO way that I would do something like that!

OT- homemade meals while on the road

I don’t know if it’s affiliated with the one in Pierre but if it is this is one of my favorite restaurants. We eat there at least once every time we are there hunting or fishing!

    Costs for Shipping

I’m sure you were using this as only an example because it’s illegal to ship ammunition via USPS. Ammo can only be shipped via UPS or Fed Ex. I bought some bismuth 16 gauge ammo from a guy on another board and he shipped it USPS. It is my understanding that both of us could have been in...

Not a Word re NE Opening Weekend

I didn't hunt the opener in Nebraska but went to Iowa instead. I posted of my luck, or lack there of when I went out on Thursday and again on Friday.

    Costs for Shipping

I would agree their shipping cost are outrageous but I'm not sure they care. They produce high quality shells and have absolutely no trouble selling them, they kind of have a corner on the market for 2" and low pressure 2.5" ammunition. I wish there were other options but I haven't found any.☹️

    A5 16gauge

I have the new A-5 Sweet Sixteen in with the 26” barrel. I don’t carry it often, I’m not really a semi auto guy but it’s a nice light, good shooting gun that I shoot well! I’ve used Fiocchi Golden Pheasant #5’s and Fiocchi 16HV6 @1300 fps with success. The only thing that I don’t like is the...

    First day in Western Nebraska

I went out again yesterday and hunted a patch of knee high wheat stubble that has always been good in the past and then a private ground patch that has always produced before. I saw one rooster and one hen. Didn’t have a show at the rooster. Guess I’m going to have to do some traveling!

    Odd Encounters...

15 or so years ago my wife and I were hunting public land out of state. We had shot several roosters that day and stopped for dinner in a steakhouse. My wife, who is not shy struck up a conversation with another hunter having dinner. He said he had been hunting a couple days and hadn’t had...
