    Local PF Banquets

The non-profits will need to band together and push for some legislative change. A couple key issues are: guests not being able to use debit cards for raffle tickets and the 50k cap on total prizes without a paid gambling manager. In between the advent of digital payment methods (Square, Venmo...

Prairie Chicken Report, what a great hunt!

Very nice! Do you by chance remember the WIA unit number that was mowed or hayed? I'll let the right folks know so the WIA website gets updated :)

    Drainage Ditches?

That's an interesting answer. I think you have to separate: 1)drainage ditches/buffers, 2)roadside ditches, and 3)land owned by a watershed district. And above all else, I'd ask a local enforcement officer if you have the chance. And also keep in mind, every state differs on this stuff so what...

    Hungarian partridge?

I see them on public land at least once a year typically. I also know of 7-8 coveys in the area around my house that I've seen from the road periodically over the last 4-5 years. They're around, but they're mobile. They do not like thick or tall grass, generally speaking, so most public...

    2021 Season

Hard to ask for better weather and conditions for a MN pheasant opener. I felt an incredible sense of gratitude being out on the prairie with my dogs again. At the end of the day I was grinning ear to ear watching the pup run through a patch of milkweed that was blowing like snow. Hope...

    Minnesota Hunting Atlas

A new acquisition doesn't show up in the Rec Compass until the WMA has been designated by a Commissioner's Designation Order. Until that point, the land may be owned by the state and open to hunting, etc., but technically it's not a WMA. Typically those orders are only issued once or twice a...

Dove Hunting - Is it a thing?

Here's my completely scattered MN dove primer: There are a small number of WMA foodplots in SW MN that are planted with small grains (wheat/oats/etc). Crop rotations vary by the year. Call the Marshall, Windom, or Slayton Area wildlife offices for more information. New prairie seedings that are...

Interesting info on MN DNR and state of land use

You're right. Farmers do often get away with draining stuff not visible from the road, although regular aerial imagery makes this a lot more difficult. I guess my point was more - you don't need "marketing" to stop that activity, nor do you really need new laws - you need better enforcement.

Interesting info on MN DNR and state of land use

The political will is simply not there to enforce anything with roadsides, even where the state does have jurisdiction (State highways). Buffer law enforcement proved that. The vast majority of the roads in rural MN are NOT under state jurisdiction or ownership so it's even less likely there...

Why are some wma areas no hunting?

Bob I believe Carl and Verna Schmidt donated both of those pieces of land (Bur Oak and Verna Schmidt WMA).

Why are some wma areas no hunting?

The State has occasionally accepted donations of land to be managed for wildlife as WMAs under the condition from the donors that they be closed to hunting. Bur Oak WMA in Le Sueur County is one that is closed to hunting but open to trapping. Other WMAs, like Talcot Lake, Walnut Lake, and Lac...

    Landlocked WMAs

Long-time listener, first-time caller. Or whatever people say. I've noticed that there are a few WMAs in SW Minnesota that are completely landlocked (ie not even a skinny access lane). Most of these have judicial ditches that connect to the property from a public road. Can you walk down the...
