Footage from my Colorado Pheasant Country Scouting Trip

Thanks Kiva. Always enjoyable to watch a good dog hunt. A caution on those boots, though. They really drag in heavy cover and will tire a dog out pretty quickly. I hunt labs as well and only use boots when absolutely necessary. I carry a set for each dog in my vest, but have found that in most...

    Heading to Kansas

Good rule of thumb if there has been any moisture and then freezing at night: If you are not on a maintained, surfaced county road, get back to one by 10am or you may stay until it freezes the following night.

    Can you top stupid!!!!

Agree with Matto. For safety as well as panic, gun should be the last thing out of the vehicle and the first thing back into it. For no reason should that routine every be broken! I've watched hunters lean very expensive rifles up against their vehicle, forget and drive off. Virtually 100% of...

    advice on labs foot problems

I've used this product with some success for the pads (bottom) of the foot: https://tuffoot.com/about/dog-paw-care ; but from your photos the problem you are having is with the top of the foot? Tuff Foot and similar products are not designed to prevent abrasion in areas normally covered by hair...

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

Just received a call from KDWP. They proofed the Garmin GPS file for 2021-22 and posted it today: https://ksoutdoors.com/KDWP-Info/Locations/Hunting-Fishing-Atlas/Hunting-Atlas/Garmin-GPS-Google-Earth-Files I took a quick look at an area I'm familiar with and it matches their printed Atlas and...

    advice on labs foot problems

I see wounds like this fairly regularly when our labs hunt in abrasive habitat types - some types of grass, especially old, rank grass, feral sunflowers are really bad. Tends to be worse when things are really dry. They also show up when our dogs are getting tired toward the end of a long hunt...

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

Thanks. I normally hunt 3 states, Kansas, South Dakota and North Dakota. All have provided excellent coverage of their public hunting areas (WIHA, state land, PLOTS, etc.) I never gave a thought to whether their maps, whether electronic or paper were accurate and complete. Of course we never had...

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

So far nothing from KDWP staff and no luck converting their Google Earth .kmz file to Garmin's .img format (which of course is proprietary). I looked at HuntStand (competitor to OnX) and they still have the 2020-21 files. Those of you that subscribe to OnX, could you take a look at the printed...

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

I haven't heard back from anyone at KDWP yet, but have a friend that is a GIS manager out here that is going to attempt to convert their Google Earth file to one compatible with Garmin GPS units. If he is successful I will make it available here if I am allowed to. The comments from matto do...

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

Had some time so I called the Secretary's office. After 3 transfers I finally found a person that knew at least part of what is going on. The GIS position has been vacant since July. The Wildlife Director put together the maps for the booklet and likely for Google Earth and arcgis. The lady had...

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

That is an option but it is oh-so-much-easier to have the file on your automotive GPS. I've unfortunately had to work with arcgis over the years and have found it cumbersome and frustrating if you don't work with it everyday, but it may be our only option this year, unfortunately.

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

I tried their email "info" address and their "webmaster". Neither produced results so far. Please let me know if you have any luck with their help line. Hopefully it is someone with a Kansas accent that answers!

2021-2022 Kansas WIHA Maps for Garmin GPS Units

Over the years I have found the downloadable Kansas WIHA maps for my Garmin GPS invaluable. It sure beats driving around with the map booklet in your lap trying to figure out where you are! In past years Kansas has always made these files available in October. This year, less than a week before...

Thanks!! I wasn't sure if a "conversation" was the same as a "private message".

It is probably staring me right in the face, but I can't figure out how to send a PM to another member on this Forum. Anyone out there willing to help me?

Hi. My wife and I will be in Goodland Kansas starting about November 20 and staying until we give up - probably a month. We have two labs. Wife is also a photographer that likes to hunt with me (she doesn't hunt). We wouldn't mind driving up to Phillips County if you want to set something up. My...

About time for a new lab

Unfortunately our 10 year old lab is starting to have health problems. Though we also have a 5 year old, I've gotten very used to hunting with two dogs. That means starting the arduous and often frustrating process of finding a reputable Labrador breeder, which we seem to have to do about every...

    SD sources of Info

With a little friendly conversation they often will give you general information that can be quite helpful, such as "...area was hit hard by hail this summer". They aren't going to tell you where to hunt, other than in generalities, but they can and often will provide information that will help...
