You know your dog is old when...

the old dogs see one of the younger dogs on point and instead of honoring, the old dog stops to take a crap. That is what Nittany did today. Here he is after he was done the important business. Nittany is on the right. After this I spent 40 minutes looking for Champ. I have no idea what he...

Booked my 1st out of state trip

I'll be heading the Maine in early October for a few days of grouse and woodcock hunting. I just got done putting down a deposit at a loge in the Jackman area and I'm looking forward to it. Anybody else been in that area before?

    Quite the evening...

I spent about 45 minutes fishing at the club pond this evening. In that time I did catch and release a couple of 20+ inch trout, see a rooster and hear at least two more, here reports of roosters chasing hens and saw a bald eagle fly overhead. It was quite an evening!

    Last run for a while

I have seen reports of nesting woodcock, so today was the last run with the dogs for a bit. I grabbed the good camera but left it in the garage after I got the dogs ready to go. That was unfortunate because I was able to move some birds today. The first point produced two hens and a rooster...

    In the snow again...

It was so nice outside that I had to take the dogs out. The walking was easier and I got a good picture before I even parked the truck. There are some bird out there that offer good points for the dogs. But the snow makes it tough to get in a position to get a good picture of the...

Made it out in the snow

I took the dogs out for one lap around the fields and the walking was tough. What should have taken 15 minutes took 45 minutes. We had 30 inches of snow last week and the fields have held up well. Here are some pictures: We ended up flushing two birds and saw two more that are in...

    May not be Kansas...

but it is still a thrill! I took the dogs to run in the area where some pheasants and quail were released in the fall. The quail were released in October and the last of the pheasants were released in mid December. I never know what I will find when I go down there and it has been a while...

Pheasant hunt with 7 and 9 year old

My two boys are 7 and 9 years old and wanted to take the dogs for a hunt when they were done with their homework. The boys like to take old iPhones along to take pictures and videos of their adventure. Over the past two days we were able to find some pheasants and quail (released birds) and...

    Let the late season begin!

I skipped lunch today and got the dogs out for a brief run close to home. I took the camera along and didn't even load the gun while walking the fields at first. The wind was in our favor from the start and that was a good thing. Not the best rooster picture but it's better than nothing...

    Vizsla quilt work

There is no bird hunting this time of year in PA so I thought I'd post this. My mother-in-law recently made another quilt with a vizsla theme. Here is a picture of her work: close up of the side panels:

    Sunday Running

I had about 30 minutes to run the dogs this morning. It was a beautiful morning with a frost on the fields where the sun didn't hit the grass yet. The dogs had a few points and we put up 5 hens. One more week to go! I only had my phone for pictures, so they are not the best.

    It's over (for now)

Today is the last day of the early pheasant and other small game season and I made one more go at it with all three dogs today. It was warm enough in the morning for Nittany to want to go along to the gamelands. I saw a few trappers and a couple of hunters out but I had the area to myself for...

    It is winding down

We have just about one week left in the early season. I took some time on Friday with all three dogs and things went well. The dogs had plenty of bird contacts with about 6 or 7 points. Only one of those points produced a rooster, the rest were hens except for the covey of quail. There were...

    Wednesday Morning Fun

I hit a few different areas Wednesday morning and had the fields to myself. The dogs worked great with many points, a retrieve on a winged bird and another fine retrieve. Champ made both retrieves today and is doing great in his first year. We put up close to 15 pheasants but no woodcock that...
