    Asking permission

I agree with duckn. It's always better to ask in person. As hard as that can be, farmers and ranchers respect a firm handshake and looking them in the eyes more than a letter.

    What else do you hunt?

It's never been about the meat for me either. I truly have been blessed with great friends and family who continue to want to hang out with me.........even now that I am older and more curmudgeny!!

    What else do you hunt?

I used hunted mule deer until I moved to Utah. (23 years ago). Mostly in Eastern Oregon and Colorado. I used to hunt waterfowl until I moved to Utah. "" "" In Utah I hunt chukar, ruffed grouse, blue grouse, pronghorn and elk whenever I can! I have hunted pheasant in eastern Colorado...

Do you shoot coyotes while pheasant hunting?

I shoot coyotes because it keeps me in the good graces of the ranchers and farmers who allow me to hunt on their properties. They ask me to shoot coyotes so I shoot coyotes.

    Utah West Desert Chukar

Funny story, the only reason that my current dog is a wirehaired Griffon is a google search for a "slow" "methodical" hunting dog. I realized that I'm not young anymore and needed a dog that might be young but hunts "old". Chasing after my lab was getting to be unpleasant.

    Utah West Desert Chukar

This doesn’t really fit here but I thought someone on this forum might care. I’ve made several trips to north west Utah the the chukar numbers are higher than I’ve seen in 20 years of living in Utah. I am consistently getting up 100 + birds per trip. It is most enjoyable seeing those little...

West Desert Chukar Numbers are incredible

Lots and lots of chukar in the West Desert. It seems like any rocky knob is holding birds right now. They must have had a great hatch last spring. I want to get out one more time. Last trip, I would guess that we saw over 100 chukar. Killed 10 so pretty poor shooting. LOL

Interesting day and a first for me.

I spent most of the day telling them to keep their eyes on the dog and the cover. I also repeatedly gave advice concerning shot selection. There were multiple opportunities where you have a straight away shot for the first 20 yards which a dream shot. They tended to wait a little long and the...

Interesting day and a first for me.

Yesterday, I was asked if I would “lease” my dog and myself out to spend a day taking folks who have never hunted ever and wanted to give it a try. So they had safety classes and shooting lessons all week and my job was to take them out and give them an opportunity to experience an upland hunt...

Getting Ready for a Chilly Third Trip to Eastern Oregon

Let's make that a priority. I have a chukar trip to Nevada that I'm trying to squeeze in before their season ends.

I would have more experience in Montana before offering any comparison between the two.

    Tail feather: how long

Good to know. I killed a pheasant this year that I am going to have added to the mount that I attached below. The pheasant has a pretty good tail feather length (24") but I thought it would be great to replace them with the 28.5" feathers. Just a thought but it doesn't sound like it would...

    Tail feather: how long

Just so no one thinks that I'm pulling their leg. This is one of the feathers laid on two 11 inch pieces of paper.

    Tail feather: how long

I have one set of tail feathers (2 feathers) sitting in my office that came off of a wild pheasant from eastern Oregon that have 34 bars and the tail feather is 28.5 inches long (total length). I have shot some others from that area that are 25 inches or so. I do have a question concerning...

Getting Ready for a Chilly Third Trip to Eastern Oregon

It is pretty amazing. It turns an inexperienced puppy into a professional hunting dog pretty quickly. It also exposes a dog and owners flaws pretty quickly as well.

    Wirehair

I've owned a Draat, a shorthair, several labs, hell I've even hunted behind a cocker spaniel one year. Currently I have a Griffon that is pretty hard to beat. The Draat was a pretty incredible hunting dog, however it also was hell bent on pursuing and killing cats, racoons, skunks, porcupines...

Getting Ready for a Chilly Third Trip to Eastern Oregon

Only took one picture of the trip to Eastern Oregon.....it was just to cold to care. The high temperatures were 10-15 while the lows were around 0 every day. The birds were running son's of bitches, even more than normal. The pheasants always run and that was expected. The quail would run...
