The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

My work always slows in front of a presidential election. People are uneasy and want to hold onto their money. So I decided what the heck might as well take a trip so I took off at 5am last Sunday and drove to Kenmare North Dakota. Left at 5am and reached the Motel around 830 Sunday night. My...

    License check. Is this legal?

Funny I have never witnessed this and have probably made 50 plus trips there in the last twenty years. Probably because it’s only on the roads that lead back to Minnesota.😂

    License check. Is this legal?

There is much about law enforcement that at times doesn’t feel right. Maybe the reason it doesn’t feel right is I primarily error on the side of what is legal… you can thank the many who don’t for this. I hunted Iowa a lot back in the late eighties early nineties. I got my vehicle searched once...

Dog Starting Heat Cycle - Bring for SD Opener ?

I’m with you…. Definitely more info needed than what was given. I have been on the other side and it was manageable. We hunted some ground one time up in South Dakota and the farmers kid brought his full blown Weimaraner out with us. I had an intact male black lab and after a couple attitude...

    Regent hunting

This can’t be the perfect post because there’s nothing about cheap beer, crappy trucks or taking a dump. Go back and add that then you’ll have the perfect goose post ( you can add mama and a train if you want but it’s not necessary)

    If you wing a bird

I had to re i had to reread his comment. He didn’t say he retrieved 95% of birds shot but that 95% of the birds he retrieved himself. If hunting without a dog there is no way you do better than 9/10 in any cover much less heavy cover. I have always had good/great retrievers and would say in...

    Hunting in the hurricane

I was hunting in SD up around Pierre about 8 or so years ago with a small group. We were doing our best to hunt into the 40+ mile an hour winds. When the birds got up into the wind they were only 10-12 yards out because they literally couldn’t hear us coming. I shot one and literally destroyed...

    Roadside Survey is Out

No doubt. I can be in a decent area of SD in 7.5 hours. At this point I am not sure where I would start in Kansas.

Does anyone have a customer service number where we can call and get this Bot recalibrated? It seems to be stuck in same old shit mode.

    Finished Dog Questions

I assume you are getting them from someone who has multiple dogs. I have inside dogs and got my last one from a guy that had multiple dogs he was training. He was 18 months old and basically a field trial washout. House breaking took a bit as he was used to dropping wherever he was and two year...

    Finished Dog Questions

I have done this a couple times in the past. My experience was to spend as much time as possible with the dog. I took mine with me as much as I could. It is important that the dog bonds with you.if you spend a lot of time with them it will make the transition easier. If you bring it home only to...

eenie meenie miney mo... which state should we go?

Well I would rather spend a day less in South Dakota than to spend a couple days more in Kansas. That said mid to late December can be interesting in South Dakota. With the crops being out you will see a lot of birds for sure but the weather can be brutal this time of year

    Warning/Danger sign

More than likely M44 launchers . Look them up they are nasty. I saw a couple West River one year they bait them and when triggered it blows cyanide out. I wouldn’t be anywhere near them.

    prairie chicken

Looks like a great time. One of my best memories are the prairie chicken hunts in SE kansas back in the 70’s. I hope you cut that receiver off and buried it out there. If you took it home with you they will now know where you live and how to get to your house.

    Forecast

You aren’t lying. In fact there were a lot of hunters that went in and around Perry back then. I had some good hunts up north of topeka even into the early 2000’s. I drive that area now often for work. I saw a mature rooster a couple summers ago, but haven’t seen one since.

    Looking for expert opinions

Even without dogs a road hunter could do quite well hunting ditches and small spots. It is perfect for a couple old guys to spend a day. Hunting in SD is not like Kansas. Growing up I spent many opening days in western Kansas hunting the vast fields of stubble and weeds. Not that you won’t find...
