Best way to break in new gun

Stiff? As opposed to being limp? Shotguns are sturdy items. I am confused by what this even means.

    Hunting during deer season

75% of all hunting-related accidents occur during a deer firearms season. That is a long term factual statistic. Part of that data is that there's simply more hunters out there during this specific season. When there's more hunters, there's a higher likelihood of an accident (sort of like...

    Hunting during deer season

Wisconsin has to be up there. There's a reason its called the deer hunting capital of the world, and more trophy caliber bucks have come from that state than any other. Take a stroll through western Wisconsin and you'll see why.

    Ear protection while bird hunting

I wish I had worn something when I started hunting to protect my ears. My left ear is very damaged from years of hunting. My right ear is perfectly fine because its covered up when I shoot.

    Early goose, teal anyone?

I used to hunt geese during the early September season pretty hard core. It was easy to get permission to hunt them on a cut hayfield. The key was scouting those fields and selecting the one they were actively using. Haven't done it now in at least 15 years though. Waterfowl hunter...

    Hunting during deer season

I wouldn't even consider pheasant hunting during Minnesota's primary firearms season with the amount of deer hunters in the area I hunt. Not only that, most of land I have persmission to hunt won't allow me out there to hunt pheasants until its over anyways. There's a lot of sketchy hunters...

    Must Haves?

This is an advantage for Ford here. With a keycode on the door, I don't even carry my keys when I hunt anymore. I just leave them in the glove box and use the keycode to open the door when I return from the hunt.

    Iowa Roadside Survey

Crops are similar here in MN from what I've seen too. Most beans are still dark green, a few just now starting to turn. They won't be harvested until a month from now, at least. And corn is after that. Prices suck so there won't be any incentive to harvest either. As long as the weather...

    Minnesota Pheasant Counts 2024

Here is whole report in case you're interested. The state is up 1% as an average from 2023. Individual zones vary wildly though. The southwest zone is down 29%. I assume flooding is the cause of this. The northern zones, central and east-central are both way up. Central is up 34% and...

    Iowa Roadside Survey

Iowa's survey has been posted. Pheasants are down 18% statewide, quail and partridge down double that. The southwest portion is down a whopping 72% from last season. I assume flooding played a role in this. The report says survey conditions were very similar to 2022 and 2023 in August...

Midwest Pheasant Harvest - 24 Seasons

The numbers for Iowa are a real eye opener. At one point 20 years ago they put over a million roosters into their harvest. But less than a decade later, just over 100,000. Astonishing drop in bird numbers there. I presume because of habitat loss. I always remember 2006 and 2007 as the two...
