Muck “chore cool” mid shin….wore them the last 2 days. I often wear them sharpie hunting in early September if the cover is wet…all day, no prob…10 miles +\-. Yes, I prefer light hiking boots, or leather Irish setters, but my chore cool muck’s are great. On my 2nd pair in 4 seasons, mainly...

    Snow depths/minimum maintenance roads

I’m north of 90 and East River. Many roads are impassable. Once you’re over the drifts the walking isn’t bad. Dogs are ok, I have booties on one of my 2. Birds are bunched up…if you can get into smaller #’s of birds it’s better. We just spent 90 minutes and came out with 3…just 2 of us...

    Current conditions 1/22/24

Wind blew 25-40+ all day yesterday, made for some serious drifts in places. Snow is fairly soft and fluffy in the non-drifted areas…shot a few today that were burrowed in the snow and flushed very close by. Saw 300+, probably more, at the spot we hunted. Approaching a cattail slough from a few...

    Dog Dies While At Trainer

I use trainers, usually the breeder I bought the dog from, and am very happy with the results. I’ve spent a decent amount of time with them, and am confident that they care about the dogs. Goose, from what I gather from reading your posts, it doesn’t seem like there’s much method to your...

    Public land newbie

You’ll see lots of elevated deer blinds on private land, don’t think they’re legal on public…lots of trucks driving around 30-60 minutes either side of legal daylight…can’t pheasant hunt til 10 am…

Been there for 25+ openers…not drives with boots, drives with trucks… ever bothered me, personally…if it keeps pheasant hunters from being there, another reason to go…

I really like your timing…my favorite time to be out there most years…consider Huron, Redfield, Aberdeen, or smaller towns in those areas. Monitor winter severity, but more importantly, weather from 5/15-6/30….if it’s cold and wet, maybe stay away…if it’s brutally dry and hot, maybe stay...

I’d suggest being between the Missouri and the James Rivers, probably North of I 90, but you can do well South of it as well.

    snow depth map?

It’s rarely the same depth in all places you’ll be walking…6” in some areas will be several feet in ditches, tree belts, the W/NW/N sides of cover, like cattail sloughs. Crusty is the worst, IMO. a foot or 18” of fluffy snow is no big deal…was in drifts to my sternum last year, had to turn...

    Dog Dies While At Trainer

I’m leery of trainers, but there are good, reputable ones out there. I’ve heard some horror stories…a client of mine was a trainer, and he trained with another trainer from Rice Lake, WI…that guy broke a dogs leg. Which then caused my client to assess other “injured” dogs the other guy had...
