    Something different…

In many ways, better than shooting birds…luckily, did both! Oh, he made incredible omelets for us on his blackstone flat top out by his truck…he won that grill shooting a 94 at a sporting clays deal this summer…doesn’t half-ass things! Incredible meat smoker, amazing array of sausages he smoked...

    Something different…

I can tell you all without question that this young man has me beat on many, many levels…not sure who learned from who!

    Something different…

This late afternoon I advised him to hunt a piece of grass, but to watch it for a half hour before he hunted it…he watched over a hundred birds run and fly in…he brought his dog in, but didn’t shoot any of the many, many he could, they weren’t the types of situations he wanted for the pointer...

Yes, how dare him! But he did let her ride with him in the cab some of the time…

    Something different…

I think that doing something kind for young, aspiring bird hunters with dogs supplants the need to go to the arctic circle to confess…

    Something different…

Driving back to the farmhouse yesterday around noon, passing some CREP, I see a solo hunter loading a pointer in a crate…stop to chat…young guy from Wisconsin…after a few minutes, he confides “I’m getting my ass kicked!”…hunted for a few days, no birds…has an 18 month gsp he’s trying to get on...

    SD season thus far….

2nd day of warm temps and reduced wind…birds still pretty bunched, at least they were before 11am or so, didn’t hunt after that. Still seeing a large # of young roosters…fully feathered and colored for the most part, definitely smaller birds…this hatch was pretty phenomenal, it appears. Drove...

    SD season thus far….

Wind much more mellow, temp over 40 to start…sunny…very pleasant. Stuff was happening right away, hunted a GPA nearby, didn’t hunt it much last year…bird #’s are good, found them bunched, kept flushing, kept flushing. Walked another 200 yards, the 10 year old points a clump, kicked it, a cock...

    20 ga Wild Pheasant ammo?

I’ve had good results with 2 3/4” lead…5’s…usually an ounce…I’m simple, I’ve had good luck with an ounce of #5 lead out of 16’s as well…if they pattern well, seems moot to a degree the gauge…I don’t have a huge sample size, but an ounce of 5’s have worked well out of 28’s as well.

Training your dog to stay closer

I’m not speaking from experience, it’s a challenge for me, but I have to constantly check in with my dogs using the vibe function on the collar, sometimes using the e function if they’re non-compliant…light cover is a challenge, heavy cover not as much…the last cover I hunted today, a small...

    Gun wish list

    I’d like a model 21 16 or 20 gauge…but I don’t use the guns I have! I like my Parker Repro 28 gauge, so I’ve thought it’d be great to have a vintage Parker…28’s are too spendy, maybe a 20? A 16? A 0 frame 16 would be fun..,

    Running

I quit a few years ago…I walk briskly at times..,not worth hurting myself. I’d run to help a buddy or dog in need…or a damsel in distress, who wants me to remove her dress, cause she wants me to see her breasts, and it’s happened, I must confess, and I assisted with great zest…😝surely I...

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Is Changing, Or Has Changed

I don’t golf, but I know what it costs…a day pheasant hunting isn’t terribly different…if cost is an issue, hunt as a resident if that’s an option and go explore and tromp around with the dog…some guys go on golf trips, some just play their local muni…sitting in the bar golfing or hunting can be...
