The guides often do not consider their clients as hunters ... many call them "sports" among other things. True that Gulf Coast to Canada.

For the most part the average age of hunters is getting higher and recruitment (number of hunters replacing those quitting) is relatively poor. I would agree that the "average" hunter is more dedicated and probably much more specialized than say 20 - 30 years ago. Thus, in the hunter pool...

    Dog Boots

Sand burrs and prickly pear cactus are common the further west you go in ND. Southwest being the most likely area where both occur.

    2024 Upland Season

Crops are mostly offf south of 94. Even 35 north of the cities… corn is coming off. Usually going up deer opener I think … will be tough around there with all that corn still up. Problem with crop reports is relevance to your particular spots is somewhat poor

    License check. Is this legal?

Iowa is somewhat known for random stops and even searches of vehicles … kind of what Iowa does.

I find it interesting that pheasants in the Dakotas are more prone to be in the open vs. Minnesota. Maybe it is the Dakotas just have more gravel roads. Amazing how many paved county roads there are in Minnesota. Seems like in the Dakotas the birds also often fly from corn field to grass...

    MN report

The spot in SW MN where we "saw" them running was in short brome grass out of the wind. The grass was just moving away from us like a wave. This is twice now in the last week or so I have seen birds moving in the grass ... they can get pretty low when they want to. Agree ... most of the...

    MN report

One day hunting trip to SW MN ... Hunted Friday only. > Cover is absolutely the thickest and tallest it has been in many years. No grass cut this year on emergency haying declarations and the early rains made the grass especially thick and tall. Long blue stem was easily 5+ feet tall in...

    MN report

Was out yesterday 9 - noon. Took one rooster. My Brittany was casting out and I could tell he was on a bird. He was out about 30 yards in front of me and starting to lock up facing me (that said the wind was coming at him over his butt and not into his face) ... I look out front and to...

    Dumb,slow,pen raised birds.

ND used to release pheasants some 30+ years ago. They banded them so you knew if you killed a released bird. They typically released them before season and a week or two into the season on game management areas owned and controlled by the state. They stopped the plan as CRP became a thing...

    Regent hunting

All relative. Eastern Montana is in the northern banana belt so ... yes Dickinson is more often colder than say Billings which has an average January temperature of 37F.

    Regent hunting

SW ND has been pay to play for some time. Nothing new except bird numbers are not quite what they were some years ago. SW ND also does not have the same amount of cover that most of ND does. What it has is offer are milder temperatures and more moderate rainfall than further north or east...

    Montana pheasant hunt

Huns can live in the most marginal of cover. It is interesting that they really do not need expanses of grassland (aka CRP). They need lots of edges and do best if small grain fields are nearby.

    Fire Risk high in ND.

Watch where you park your truck. Avoid any taller grass that might touch the undercarriage. Smokers - well keep it inside the cab.
