Montana pheasant hunt

Just got back from a hunt in eastern Montana. I was impressed with the number of Huns. Pheasant and sharp tail numbers seemed about the same as last year. This was my fourth year going. My first year I never saw a hun. 2nd year I finally saw a covey and got 1 bird. Last year I saw multiple coveys. This year I think we saw at least 1 covey every stop, or close to it. One spot we flushed a covey, went to look for singles and flushed a larger covey. Then flushed another covey when we shot. One thing I learned if you don’t see them down, good luck finding them.

Huns can live in the most marginal of cover. It is interesting that they really do not need expanses of grassland (aka CRP). They need lots of edges and do best if small grain fields are nearby.
