    Anyone can do it ?

There is a maybe 1/4 acre grass patch between the house and the road. When we had cows it was a holding pen before the working pens. This spring I planted a bunch of various hay species left over from other years and projects, turned out to be mostly red clover and sweet clover. We wanted...

    Added to the habitat

I looked into some more CRP for next year. I don’t think they will get much enrolled for the payment they are proposing. Defiantly below market rent. Then to lock that in for 10-15 years is questionable.

    Chick sighting thread?

Saw my first brood on the 14th, which I thought was early. Cutting hay today, I leave about 1/2 of my hay to cut later but this field is an important income producer. Hate to do it but it is early enough they will renest, hopefully in the CRP.

    Added to the habitat

I seeded down another five acres of CRP in a buffer strip. These little rains should get it going. I also did a burn on one field and spread some fort seeds I collected. We will see if they take ahold.

The oddest thing you have had your dog point

My 1/2 Gordon Setter 1/2 black lab always went with me to check cows. One evening we were sitting on a hill checking on the new bull and she would go on point right in front of me, walk slowly a few feet and go on point again. I looked around and saw pocket gopher mounds, she was pointing them...

Sounds like a no from the USDA

Yes, hopefully there won’t be supplies so short that it would have made a difference.

When do we start the push for change?

Don’t know what you base that on. If erosion doesn’t happen for ten years it doesn’t happen, and if it doesn’t raise a crop for ten years it doesn’t raise a crop. Seems like if a piece is in grass for ten years both are accomplished. I’m thinking maybe some folks just don’t like seeing money...

When do we start the push for change?

We are getting a ways off the original intent of the thread but allow me one more observation. The CRP program is functioning as intended. Wildlife habitat is listed fifth of six objectives in the USDA excerpt I posted above, in the secondary category. It isn’t meant to be permanent. It is a...

When do we start the push for change?

I have been enrolling ground into the EQUIP program. Smaller pieces, harder to qualify and only 3-5 years but the last piece is paying $490/acre. This is on rented ground, which I don’t think can be done with CRP.

When do we start the push for change?

From the USDA : ”The Food Security Act of 1985 was enacted December 23, 1985. The Act directed the Department of Agriculture to enroll 40 to 45 million acres by 1990 with two primary goals: reducing soil erosion on highly erodible cropland and curbing the production of surplus commodities...

When do we start the push for change?

But you would need a totally different program, that isn’t the purpose of CRP. As to Biden doing anything with CRP, you need to look at which Senators are calling for the use of it...

    New CRP

If there is indeed a shortage of foodstuffs, which I admit no one can see the future, what would be your recommendation? You want to see the SHTF watch what happens if we have a famine in Europe. Seems folks can stomach third world countries being hungry, I’m not so sure the reaction would be...
