    SD Crowing Counts?

Anybody know anything about crowing counts? I was just outside the lodge here and it is first light, very foggy, humid and calm. I hear a lot of roosters crowing and so I started to see how long I could count in between pheasant crows. The highest number I got to was 3 seconds in between...

    Seeing more birds....

Out at the farm again this week and it is amazing how many more birds i am seeing this week than last week. Seems like roosters are all bunched up at the south end of farm and hens are in groups of 10-20 at the north end. Some intermingled of course too and reports are coming in of roosters...

    Berthelsons New Role - Partnerships

Pete Berthelson, of Pheasants Forever Nebraska, stepped into a new role recently. IMO this is largely undeveloped territory and Pete is a great guy. They need to forge partnerships with as many other organizations , interested in the stewardship of the land, as possible. Here's more info on...

    CRP Sign-up #45 scheduled for May 20th

General CRP signup #45 is scheduled to run from May 20th to June 14th 2013. Current CRP enrollment is at 27 millions acres with 3.3 million set to expire this fall. The current 2008 extended farm bill cap is 32 million acres so according to my analysis the gap is 8.3 million acres to work with...

    Hefty's Promote Riparian buffers

On AG-PHD tonight, the Hefty boys spent a good deal of time talking about the benefits and function of riparian buffers. They made a good point , and I share in this thought, that there is much good ground in CRP that should be farmed and a lot of area next to waterways being farmed that should...

Demand for Hay could be up in 2013

I noticed recently that hay prices remain quite high considering the ongoing drought conditions. Cattle producers demand for feed is keeping hay prices high and high prices will cause more haying pressure. I would assume this would translate to more road ditches mowed and maybe even more state...

Maybe new trespass laws and waterfowl tags for Non-Res

Reading agweek today, I learned that the new trespass law was approved unanimously. I believe that law now enforces a 1- year loss of license for persons caught trespassing. Anything that improved the prevention of trespassing I am for. I saw there was another bill to give GFP the authority...

Encouraging news on CRP in South Dakota

With the advent of the latest General CRP signup coming up in May, I learned today that there rental rate proposals on the table to make CRP more attractive. 1 example would be where a farmer in Miner county had CRP expiring that was paying $50 (rate from enrolling 10-15 years ago) could...

Encourage you to post a listing for your group

After working the show at National Pheasant Fest in Mpls last weekend i was once again reminded how many small groups are out there that would be a good fit for our camps but just have a hard time rounding up a couple more hunters to meet our 4 person camp minimums. More acres farmed in 1980 than today

Watching AG PHD and according to the Hefty Brothers we are farming fewer acres today than in 1980. Something like 285 million in 1908 vs. 335 million today. This would be consistent with the SD Game and Fish charts showing net zero set aside acres back then.
