    Boss shotgun ammunition

I've been shooting both BOSS #5's and #4's in the magnum's out of my 12 guage in 3". I used them each for one full season and found better success with the #5's so that's what I'm going to shoot until something better comes along. They're spendy but not horrible, for the amount of money I...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

I had pretty much the same sentiment. I've got 4-5 absolutely dynamite late season spots that I didn't even bother with, no snow to push pheasants in there made for some tough hunting in December. November was great, I had one week during my normal bowhunting vacation where I killed 7 in 4...

    Tail talk 😄

I tend to like the long tail of my golden, when he's birdy I enjoy seeing it wag to the point where it's almost hitting him in the face, also like the sound of it in the cattails when I can't see him, the sound of that tail thumping and a couple of cattails moving makes me smile. It wags...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

I think you're right on the cattails. We flushed a lot in really thick switchgrass and cattails Sunday, but even in December we've been doing fine in the grass. Until we get some actual snow they're not going to be forced to hit that thick cover yet.

    Brag Post

My little field golden flushed and retrieved his 200th career pheasant this weekend. 108 of those in the not so great pheasant state of WI and 92 in SD. I always told my wife it’d be neat to get to 250 over him; and as long as he stays healthy into the tail end of his career I don’t see any...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Up to 14 on the year. Hunted Saturday in the rain without moving a bird. My dumbass didnt bring my gun in overnight and it froze. Sunday we flushed a big brood with 4 staggered roosters in it and I could only watch helplessly as they all flew away unharmed. I did get it thawed out and killed an...

    Need Help on Gun Upgrade!

Hey Goosemaster- this is an older thread, I ended up buying a Retay Masai Mara, so far so good.

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Yup- I haven't hunted any of my private land spots yet. Most of my permissions are for after rifle season. I think there were some late broods, I killed one this week that had barely any color, if he didn't cackle I wouldn't have shot him. He had a buddy that I couldn't tell on as well.

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Hunting has really picked up in the last week, killed limits twice and had a couple days of 10+ hen flushes without roosters. Multiple young brood flushes and a few dumbies still sitting tight. Most of the pressure seems to have died off from people. I’m up to 8 on the year with 6 being in the...

    Need Help on Gun Upgrade!

So I’ve now got a couple weeks under my belt with this new gun. I’ve killed a total of 19 pheasants, 8 of those in WI. I’ve only missed 2 birds that I should have killed to this point otherwise I’ve been (knock on wood) knocking everything down that I should. No misfires and they seem to fold...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Killed one young rooster yesterday and lung hit another that sailed a mile before piling up over a ridge into a slough that we never did turn up. Hunted hard and flushed 3 birds, last one may have been a rooster but couldn't tell until a profile from 80 yards away. I wasn't hunting the golden...

    Need Help on Gun Upgrade!

I haven’t had time to throw up a patterning board yet but they did send pictures of the new gun patterning fine. I’ll do a full analysis next weekend and get a few different rounds through it and let everyone know.

    Need Help on Gun Upgrade!

For those just popping in, I bought a Retay Masai Mara, I like the looks and feel of the gun, it just wasn't shooting where I was aiming and they're sending a brand new one under warranty, you can see my post above explaining what happened.

    Need Help on Gun Upgrade!

Thought I'd circle back on this. I patterned this for pheasants and the pattern seemed low, like 70% of the bb's low with a Mod choke at 30 and 40 yards, thought maybe that was just a quirk of the gun. This spring I didn't pattern (I know I'm dumb), called in a tom and fired 3 rounds of...

How do you store your frozen game and fish

Vac seal is the only way to go for everything. We still use bags for ground ven/elk but everything else gets vacuum sealed.

    Rate your past season

WI was inconsistent. We ended up killing 15 roosters in WI, most on public land with a couple private land birds sprinkled in. Seemed we flushed a a ton of hens in WI which is good. This is the worst winter in my lifetime however for the amount of snow and cold, I'm quite concerned about what...

    follow-up to huntable areas thread...

I hunted the last 3 days south of Aberdeen and there are areas to still hunt. I would say 50% of sloughs are completely snowed in but many are huntable once you get past that first big drift. Also about impossible to approach from the west or north. A lot of areas have a few deer trails through...

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

And now I’ve got COVID so I can’t even give you a report. Hopefully next weekend I can get out somewhere.

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

Of course they're getting 18" of snow where I was planning on hunting, the weather for the weekend looks good but man that's tough. May just head west and drive around until I find some spots that are attainable and figure it out from there.

    Huntable Areas?!?!?

Yeah this is going to turn into a game time decision on where I’m going. There are still some sloughs worth hunting up north according to my uncle. Just a pain to get to but once you’re in it’s not horrible.
