Sounds like a no from the USDA

Sold the hay today. Sold for $50/ton less than before the release of the CRP, at 5.5 tons/acre that kinda stinks. They had a huge bunch of hay, much of it had native grass in it. Huh. I’ve got a good size patch of CRP we burned this spring. Switch and bluestem in prime stage right now. Kinda...

Sounds like a no from the USDA

I took some hay over to the sale barn. They have hay coming out their ears today. All of a sudden there are tons of grass hay coming in, most bales have switch and bluestem in them. I wonder where that stuff is coming from ? Not supposed to be able to sell the CRP hay, at least that has always...

Sounds like a no from the USDA

I have been trying to peddle some grass hay. I talked to a prospective buyer and he told me CRP will be released this coming week. He is a level headed person not inclined to rumors. Anyone else heard rumblings ? I burned some bluestem and switch this spring that is in prime hay condition.

    Drainage Ditches?

Drainage ditches in Iowa are privately owned by the adjoining landowner. All the ones I know of anyway.

    Anyone can do it ?

There is a maybe 1/4 acre grass patch between the house and the road. When we had cows it was a holding pen before the working pens. This spring I planted a bunch of various hay species left over from other years and projects, turned out to be mostly red clover and sweet clover. We wanted...

    Added to the habitat

I looked into some more CRP for next year. I don’t think they will get much enrolled for the payment they are proposing. Defiantly below market rent. Then to lock that in for 10-15 years is questionable.

    Chick sighting thread?

Saw my first brood on the 14th, which I thought was early. Cutting hay today, I leave about 1/2 of my hay to cut later but this field is an important income producer. Hate to do it but it is early enough they will renest, hopefully in the CRP.

    Added to the habitat

I seeded down another five acres of CRP in a buffer strip. These little rains should get it going. I also did a burn on one field and spread some fort seeds I collected. We will see if they take ahold.

The oddest thing you have had your dog point

My 1/2 Gordon Setter 1/2 black lab always went with me to check cows. One evening we were sitting on a hill checking on the new bull and she would go on point right in front of me, walk slowly a few feet and go on point again. I looked around and saw pocket gopher mounds, she was pointing them...

Yes, hopefully there won’t be supplies so short that it would have made a difference.

When do we start the push for change?

Don’t know what you base that on. If erosion doesn’t happen for ten years it doesn’t happen, and if it doesn’t raise a crop for ten years it doesn’t raise a crop. Seems like if a piece is in grass for ten years both are accomplished. I’m thinking maybe some folks just don’t like seeing money...

When do we start the push for change?

We are getting a ways off the original intent of the thread but allow me one more observation. The CRP program is functioning as intended. Wildlife habitat is listed fifth of six objectives in the USDA excerpt I posted above, in the secondary category. It isn’t meant to be permanent. It is a...
