South Dakota

Take a loot at the drought monitor. The majority of the country that's east of the Rockies has very little drought.

I used to waterfowl hunt too. Haven't gone for 5 years now, with no intention of going again on my own will anytime soon.

Not enough ducks around here anymore. The migration pattern has shifted them westward. Years of drought have also played a role.

But the biggest factor is this: we have too many early seasons before the regular opener. There is an early goose season, an early teal season, and an early youth season. By the time the general season opens, every local duck and goose has been 1) shot or 2) shot at.

By the time the main migration occurs, deer season is open. No chance I'm leaving my stand to target a bird. I've only got 9 days to deer hunt.

Now, that being said, if someone invited me to a duck hunt and they had a good spot scouted in advance, I would consider it. Because I do enjoy a good duck hunt.

South dakota has very few birds this year, public land was flooded across the state. Game warden told me to spread the word 😉
You forgot to mention the rattlesnakes. Lots of rattlesnakes in South Dakota this year....especially in areas that hold pheasant. They like the same habitat. If you're seeing pheasant....that area is probably loaded with snakes.
