New from MN

New guy to the forum from West Central MN. Been Pheasant Hunting for most of my life around the area so not new to the sport by any means. Last year I decided to retire my lab Jake. We ended the year with a bang with him being a part of right around 100 birds (farm birds included in there). We have a German Wirehair pup coming in the spring. It will be my first pointer. I will be joining our local NAVHDA chapter to gain some training knowledge and make sure this new dog can reach his full potential.

This season will be a slow season for me with a gap in dogs so if anyone is wanting to meet up for a hunt I have the spots if you have a dog!

Welcome to UPH. I'm originally from Canby, MN and still do a little hunting around there but currently live in Watertown, SD. Where are you from in West Central MN?

I am up in Ottertail County. I actually go down every year and hunt in Canby!
Maybe we can plan a day this fall to meet around Canby. I have a friend from the Fergus area that lives on Ottertail Lake. My father worked for Ottertail Power Company.

I am very intrigued by wirehairs, but I am not sure if we could ever get a dog that isn't a GSP at this point. I grew up with a Griffon, so a wirehair would be smack in the middle of the two! Welcome from MN.

Good luck with the new puppy! Once you have a pointer you will never go back in my experience.

I'm a new guy to this site from MN as well. We lost our family/hunting dog in December. My wife is still mourning his loss and "is not ready" for another dog yet. It looks like I won't be doing much upland this fall unless I play dog!

Well depending on where you are maybe we can switch off who runs around the field chasing birds while the other shoots! Be warned though I am a poorly trained bird dog and I occasionally bite

I hunted for a decade before I had my own dog and still harvested roosters on a regular basis. It can be done. I didn't have the means to own or take care of a dog at that point in my life.

You have to hunt lighter cover and take a stop n go approach rather than just watching/following the dog.

I've hunted over some absolutely terrible dogs and I can positively say that I'd rather hunt without a dog than with a poor one.
