Wild, short-tailed roosters have been some of my greatest nemeses -- often flying, straight away, low, and FAST!
 
We ran into a rooster that didn't have a tail once. Upon identifying it was a rooster we dropped him. Probably lost his tail to a coyote
 
Here in Pennsylvania hunting government birds lots of roosters have no tail.
Few live long enough to grow their feathers out.
I've only come across a few released birds,but unfortunately Montana released a lot.Im not a fan of releasing pheasant.
