I've not had a Lab get hard-mouthed from a wounded bird. They seem to 'know' when to squeeze a bit to control the bird, but never have gone nuts and torn one apart, etc.

There are two things I swear by for ears: TrizUltra+Keto Flush and Zyomax Ear Solution. TrizUltra is also a must have for the first aid bag for wound cleaning, etc. My med bag always has a full bottle ready for use.
